winter

I knew this area of the county was having a bit of difficulty with all the rain.  I decided to pack up the camera and see what I could see.  Despite some of the environmental concerns hovering over vineyards, I still like looking at them.  Of course they’re dormant in the winter so not quite as pleasing to look at.  But, in these conditions they might be interesting.  Sure enough, the Russian River had risen enough to spread some of her liquid gold onto the surrounding landscape.  Beautiful.

Winter is my favorite time to be at the ocean.  The light, the storms, the quiet beaches bring out the best conditions for photography.  The summer warmth is nice but give me the contrasting muted tones of winter and I’m a happy man.

It’s winter. Time to get to the slopes.  Play in the snow and feel winter’s charms.  One of the great benefits and enjoyments of living in California is the proximity of ocean and mountains.  On the one hand there’s the power of the Pacific Ocean just a few miles from home.  Beach walks and just hanging out at the ocean watching sea and sky is a never ending treat.  And now it’s winter.  The skies have dropped the slippery white powder many live for.  It’s not far from the ocean to get to the beauty of Tahoe and frolic in winter’s bounty.  Happy skiing.

I was thinking about a friend on the east coast.  It’s winter in all its glory there.  Cold, brash, harsh, filled with snow.  Not here in sunny CA.  I have to remind myself with images like this that winter, in the way that I think about winter, actually exists.  This was taken up in the Sierras one January day when snow was coming down hard.  It was so quiet.  I like the quiet, and hiking around in the storm gave me some sense of peace.  I like that too.

It’s fun walking around a big city during the Christmas holidays.  The bustling people, the decorations, the festivities.  If you actually have to get something done it may be a different story, but just to be there and be a part of everything, basking in the warmth of the season, is what it’s all about.

It was a beautiful October stretch and I wanted to get away.  So, I jumped in the car and drove the 5 hours up to Yosemite.  Much different than the walking days of John Muir.  I wanted to hike up to Cathedral Lakes and was prepared to spend the night.  I figured it was a great time for some fall  shots, it was fairly clear out and no forecast for any precipitation.  No snow at the trail head so a full go.  As a got higher, some patchy snow showed up at when I got to the upper lake it was mostly snow covered with nobody around.  Wow!  How unexpectedly beautiful.  And cold.  When the sun started to set with some cloud cover rolling through it was even better.

Yes, it’s beginning to fade, but still it is winter.  At least it is in California.  Is it where you live?  This shot is was taken over my back fence as the sky was going through its early morning color display and the grasses in the field were covered with a deep and persistent frost.  I don’t necessarily like being out in the cold, but the awesome color drew me out this morning.

It’s not from this year, but it certainly gives the impression of winter.  It seems like I should be sad for the rose, but I’m not.  It didn’t quite have enough time to fully blossom when the force of winter took over, and that’s OK.  I like winter too.  It lends a certain air of beauty to the scene, don’t you think.

Are you someone who likes snow or is by now completely fed up with it?  Since it doesn’t fall where I live, I rather like it.  I can go and have my experience and then leave.  But, for those of you who live with it a good portion of the winter I can imagine growing rather tired of it.  But traveling up to Lake Tahoe at 6,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains I expect and even want snow!  And I’m glad I went here first upon arrival.  Later this night, it snowed hard for hours and I couldn’t even get here with my wimpy city car.  But here, I loved hiking around the snow in my water-proof boots, cutting trails, lugging my camera and tripod around, hunting for angles, imagining snow angels.  A lovely winters day.
