I knew this area of the county was having a bit of difficulty with all the rain.  I decided to pack up the camera and see what I could see.  Despite some of the environmental concerns hovering over vineyards, I still like looking at them.  Of course they’re dormant in the winter so not quite as pleasing to look at.  But, in these conditions they might be interesting.  Sure enough, the Russian River had risen enough to spread some of her liquid gold onto the surrounding landscape.  Beautiful.

Fall is such an incredible time of color and change.  The natural world is on its way to death; only to begin anew again next spring, I might add.  But now, it’s autumn.  I’m enjoying the warm days and cool nights here in my part of California.  And my little part includes the too-numerous-to-mention wine vineyards, in whatever season always an incredible subject for a photographic image or two.  This one comes from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County.

Fall is fast approaching which reminds me that the grape harvest is happening around here.  So I think of wine and then I remember the Frey house.  It’s part of a biodynamic winery up in Mendocino county somewhere in the middle of nowhere.  It’s family run and this house is part of what is possible to rent for your next big event.  It’s a fun place.  Drink up.

Wine country.  That’s what I often say when someone asks me where I live.  There are so many vineyards and wineries around here, dotted within the valleys and hillsides north of San Francisco.  I used to buy wine only from Sonoma county, the county I live in.  But now, since I went to a wedding in Napa county and went back to explore the area, I do, on occasion, purchase something from Napa.  Actually, I don’t even drink that much wine.  It’s the beauty of the area that I really like.  These vineyards are up on the hillside above St. Helena.

I love the fall and it seems to be fading fast.  Storms and rain moving in where I live.  Yes, we may be on the edge of winter so a little more fall color seems appropriate.  The vineyards in Sonoma county are quite colorful this time of year.  The grapes are mostly gone, their juice already working its magic in large vats or barrels with a little yeast thrown in.  Sounds simple but it’s not.  So while the juice is doing its unseen thing, we get the incredible spoils; the beauty of the vines and leaves themselves in a setting sublime, mingling with natures color clock, changing its appearance from green to yellow to orange/red before falling off completely.  Now that’s art!

Yes, it’s autumn and the leaves are turning color and falling.  With so many vineyards around here, it doesn’t take much of a drive to experience the fall colors.  One of my favorite areas is out in the dry creek area of Sonoma county where this was taken.  So many beautiful images to behold.

I don’t drink a heck-of-a-lot-of wine, but I do enjoy a good glass of red now and again.  And living in California’s “wine region” it’s pretty easy to find a good bottle.  Recently I went up over the hill into St. Helena in the Napa Valley.  Inside the old Christian Brothers building which is now the Culinary Institute of America is this beautiful cellar and old oak barrel.  Sure would be fun to have a cellar like that!

I know it’s not fall right now, but I’ve always liked this photo and I’ve had it neatly tucked away in my “photos to post” folder for quite a while.  Now it grabs me.  I guess photos have a life of their own.  They entertain, inspire, inform, move in and out of one’s life, and then come back again.  There’s a certain individuality about them.  This vineyard is not too far from home, in the Sonoma County wine region of California.  I was driving around the county one day, admiring the fall colors when I spied the worker driving his rig.  I patiently waited for him to get closer to me and for the sun to shoot a few rays into the field.  Man and nature in harmony.
