Look.  Up in the sky.  If in the middle of a large cities downtown, you’ll probably have to look through any number of huge buildings.  Never having worked in one myself, I’ve always wondered what all those stories are for.  How much office work does one city need?  And these buildings are tall and many.  So many financial, legal and insurance people I guess.  Good for them, but I’ll stay street level in the cities and get up high in the mountains.

Fairhaven is the transportation hub of Bellingham.  Trains, busses and the Alaska ferry all converge here.  One morning while visiting my dad, I got up before dawn and went down to the terminal to see what I could see.  Not much going on down there in the sleepy hours of the morning but as it grew light the activity picked up.  The train arrived from Vancouver on its way south to unknown parts.  I wandered down in front of the big engine.  It was awfully impressive from that angle.

OK.  Who knows what this building is and where it is??  To me, it’s always looked like one of those world war II German helmets.  I  picture Sargent Schultz when I see it.  I know it’s not quite right, but I can’t seem to help it.  It’s actually quite an interesting and unique building.

Wandering the neighborhoods of Seattle I happened upon the lovely Gas Works Park on the shore of Lake Union.  Such a beautiful place to while away the time and let the day turn to evening to night.  Directly across the lake lie the buildings of a clustered downtown.  I stood around for some time and let darkness creep in around me.  A peaceful evenings meditation.

It’s always exciting to be riding the big ferry and pull into the dock at Orcas Island in the heart of the San Juan Islands of Washington State.  I lived here for 4 years and my daughter was born here.  For me it has that deja vu feeling; a palpable sense of familiarity that is quietly comforting.  In and of itself, though, it is a magical place.  Mountain hikes, lakes to swim in, salt water beaches to explore and just the relaxed ambiance of Island life to bask in.  Pure magic.

Everything in context.  Just east of the Seattle center and its iconic space needle is, go figure, a residential neighborhood.  Some people have a train to listen to as it makes its way.  Of course, the sound of traffic is ever present in most large cities.  But, these folks have the presence of a needle in their midst.  One can only dream.

A lot of photography for me is simply being out and about.  I can head out on a mission to shoot a certain area or event and then find something completely unexpected and unplanned that pops up.  Or, if I keep open enough, I’ll head down a side road, just to see what’s there.  This cabin popped out at me one day while shooting something completely different.  I traveled down one of those side roads and voila.  I love the openness and exploration that photography affords me.

I know the space needle takes the prize as far as Seattle icons go, but the EMP building at the Seattle Center gets my vote.  It’s newer and much shorter though so just doesn’t get the press or views that the needle does.  This building has so many nooks and crannies it’s not hard to find a good angle that reframes the eye.  And speaking of eye, do you see it?

It’s such a beautiful drive out of Bellingham onto the Lummi Indian Reservation.  The road eventually hugs the water.  You cross over and then pass the mouth of the Nooksack River and then find yourself with unencumbered views back into Bellingham.  Expansive views that take in the whole panorama of the city.  If it was clear out all the way to the east, the ominous presence of Mt. Baker would be showing itself.  But today the ever present cloud cover is here yet again.  Clouds aren’t so bad really.  Especially when enjoying the drive, the air is warm enough and the views magnificent.

Weather is almost a factor in Bellingham.  If you’re a sun freak it’s probably not for you.  Clouds, whether or not it’s raining, are always in the equation.  I really didn’t like that part of growing up there.  I had a hunger for sun and the light.  Of course, now that I have lived other places and traveled quite a bit and even now live in sunny California, I appreciate the beauty of the place and its aggravating climate.  Now I enjoy rediscovering the beautiful spots of NW Washington.
