What a great time of the year and what a pristine place to view some of the remaining color that fall so humbly bestows upon us.  It’s a real treat to be able to wander along the roads of the eastern Sierra for just one purpose; observing the beauty of nature’s change of season.  The bright and alive green of summer slowly starts to change and before long becomes a vibrant, intense explosion of yellows and gold’s with just a touch of everlasting green, adding just the right amount of contrast to the road less traveled.  There were not many people traversing this patch of roadway on this day.  That’s just fine with me.  It makes this little stretch of heaven just that much more inviting.

Being late in the season, the cabin was empty.  All the rustic mountain cabins were empty, ready for the maintenance they’d need before next year.  The emptiness of the cabins and quiet of the high Sierra made for great exploration.  There was a sense of mystery and charm, especially as the turning colors of fall made their way into the frame.  I sure love the mountains.

Nestled between the villages of Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo on the southern Caribbean side of Costa Rica is where you’ll find the gorgeous property of Casa Viva and the local beach area Punta Uva.  I love the Caribbean side.  It’s by far the less traveled of the two sides and as the wave action isn’t as pronounced as the western side, it presents a more relaxed entry into the refreshingly warm ocean waters.  Our cabin was set only a few hundred feet from the mostly vacant beach.  The jungle was near, the monkeys and sloths roamed the trees of the property.  The fruit, the fruit, the fruit.  Bike riding to the two villages.  A perfect place to call home for a time.

Up the lazy river.  Around here, that’s what the Atchafalaya is.  Slow moving.  Without a ripple, she moves with nary a care as mosquitoes buzz above the catfish waters and bugs of an unknown origin call out, breaking the silence of the moment.  I can almost imagine a log raft floating into view with a young boy or two doing some fishin’ with their stick poles, cut off pants, bare feet and straw hats.  Makes me pine for a slower world where I can throw my cares into the river.  Just let them float away on their own time and leave me to gaze out at my dreams, feel the freshness of the evening, watch the fish jump.

I don’t pretend to be a tour guide or advocate for any particular destination.  Thus, I have no idea who the artist of this particular sculpture is or even what it depicts.  Guess that leaves more for the imagination.  I see two young, innocent, angelic cupids resting and hiding in the leaves.  They’re ready to give their blessings as you walk by.  Maybe you’ll even stop and rest, sit on a bench nearby.  They’ll pierce you in the heart.  Your love of life and other will deepen.  What do you see?

If you look hard you’ll see two fishermen trying their luck in the creek.  This is such an idyllic place.  High in the mountains at over 10,000 feet it has everything.  Numerous lakes.  And with the fisherpeople we saw, there must be plenty of fish.  Mountain peaks a plenty, seemingly close enough to touch.  Trails that are easy to hike on and not too steep.  And maybe best of all, the freshness of the mountain air.  Rugged, expansive, easily accessible.  Summer in the Sierras.  Nothing could be finer.

Poking around the Louisiana swamps in great fun, if you can get the mosquitoes to stay away.  Just crossing the border from Texas begins to change the flavor and the swamplands become more prevalent.  When traveling through I would often move off the main road and find an area with some semblance of trail just to immerse myself in the environment.  Awesome.

The Russian River meanders through Sonoma county in California, meeting the Pacific Ocean at Jenner.  Before it gets there it travels through a lot of wine country.  Many a vineyard pulls water out of its flow to irrigate their vines.  In fact, the Russian River appellation is a well known region of luscious California wines.  On this day I was out playing with my camera, visiting some of the many great wineries and enjoying the crispness of the day.

Of course you know I love to explore.  So, when on my way to New Orleans I decided to take a bit of a side trip up into a section of bayou along the Atchafalaya River.  After a beautiful winding drive up a rutty gravel road I came to this spot along the river.  A perfect place to stop and relax.  I stopped the car, got out and just set a spell.  Just me and the catfish.

I was thinking about a friend on the east coast.  It’s winter in all its glory there.  Cold, brash, harsh, filled with snow.  Not here in sunny CA.  I have to remind myself with images like this that winter, in the way that I think about winter, actually exists.  This was taken up in the Sierras one January day when snow was coming down hard.  It was so quiet.  I like the quiet, and hiking around in the storm gave me some sense of peace.  I like that too.
