Fairhaven is the transportation hub of Bellingham.  Trains, busses and the Alaska ferry all converge here.  One morning while visiting my dad, I got up before dawn and went down to the terminal to see what I could see.  Not much going on down there in the sleepy hours of the morning but as it grew light the activity picked up.  The train arrived from Vancouver on its way south to unknown parts.  I wandered down in front of the big engine.  It was awfully impressive from that angle.

I wonder where he’s going.  This is a classis example of setting out to capture one thing and coming back with so much more.  I was driving around Los Angeles one night, looking for a good angle on the downtown area.  I parked the car and got out to walk around when I ran across this train platform.  I just stopped and waited for the right moment.  The downtown cityscape could wait too.

No, it’s not the 3:10 to Yuma, but it could be the 5:10 to Pasadena.  And what do people do these days while waiting?… check out whatever’s on their phone.  In fact, for the most part, it seems that no one waits at all, anymore.  A world with no down time.  Always gotta be updating or texting or tweeting or talking or anything to just keep pushing onward.  How much do you let yourself do nothing; just be wherever it is you are?  No phone, no talking, just taking it all in on this beautiful Earth; just waiting for the train.

I suppose he could  be anywhere.  Late at night, one train passing while he waits for the one that will get him to wherever it is he’s going.  I often wonder; is he just getting off work and heading home?  Off to see his lover?  Been out on the town?  Another moment in time, probably not even marked by the subject himself who’s probably lost in thought, waiting yet again.  Where is he?  Do you know?

Well, I’m heading up the the great NW for a week so thought I’d leave you with an image from there.  The Amtrak train comes through every morning from Vancouver, BC heading south to Seattle.  One early morning I got up and wound my way down the road a mile to the station to take a closer look at one of those big engines.  It’s huge!  And powerful looking.  No “I think I can” to this little engine.  It didn’t even seem like it wanted to stop.  “Just get on board and we’ll get going” it seemed to say.  All aboard, indeed.  Seattle and Bellingham, here I come.
