sunbeams

My sisters and I were exploring the affluence of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina and putting our toes in the Atlantic.  For me this gets a bit mundane.  I want to hike/walk and explore the topography.  So, we drove toward the mainland, crossed a bridge and stopped on Pinckney Island, lying between Hilton Head and the mainland.  Hey!  It’s a wildlife refuge!  There are trails to walk.  I was happy.

So, am I lucky or not?  I mean going to Palm Springs in the California desert is supposed to be clear and sunny.  Maybe a few wispy clouds.  But fog??  I’ll take it that I got lucky.  I met a local guy on the trail who said he hadn’t seen this kind of fog in 6 years.  I was actually at the South Lykken Trail head before dawn but it was so foggy I had to wait around for some light.  And as the sun got higher, the fog started lifting just a bit.  Perfect for some unexpected desert images.

I love Yosemite.  If you’ve never been, just go.  One mid winters day I got up well before sunrise and drove the 5 hours to the park for a quick overnight and a hike or two.  I’d never been up the Four Mile Trail so that was as good a reason as any to see how far up I could get until running into snow and having to turn back.  Actually, I got almost all the way up to Glacier point before the snow said to stop.  Slowly winding my way back down I stopped to take some time to simply gaze out at El Cap and the beautiful Yosemite Valley down below.  And then the sun came out from behind the cloud bank!  A remarkable place Yosemite is.

We were up in the little town of Mendocino on the northern California coast for a couple of days.  It was winter and when the rain stopped we hopped in the car and drove a couple of miles into town to do a little exploring.  The shops are fun and there’s a nice little walk right in town on the bluffs above the blue Pacific Ocean.  As we emerged out of one of the shops after some time in there, we were greeted by  these sunbeams trying to find their way out of the passing storm.  Luckily, I take my camera with me while shopping.

Last summer I was driving down 101 through the redwoods.  Sadly, it was all a foggy overcast.  Never-the-less I chose to take a side road up into the hills and check out the Lady Bird Johnson grove of trees.  I figured it would really be socked in, but when in Rome….  While driving, the road started heading up and up and when I actually got to the grove I was at the transition point of the fog and blue sky above.  Wow!  What luck.  What contrast; the sunbeams filtering down through the trees revealing the blue sky above.  Natures perfection.
