With a good friend being in Denmark right now, I thought of my time in Copenhagen.  Wandering around in that beautiful city is so easy and rewarding.  With statues and architectural art everywhere it’s not hard to need some time to get around.  Even though the city is entirely flat and perfect for walking.  This statue depicts C. F. Tietgen, one of Denmark’s early industrialists.  He looks good with blooming tulips.

Dreaming of Spring?  This woman seems to be.  But it must be a large responsibility to be a guardian of the King’s castle surrounded by the beautiful rhododendrons.  Her name is Echo and lives in the gardens of Rosenborg castle in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I don’t pretend to be a tour guide or advocate for any particular destination.  Thus, I have no idea who the artist of this particular sculpture is or even what it depicts.  Guess that leaves more for the imagination.  I see two young, innocent, angelic cupids resting and hiding in the leaves.  They’re ready to give their blessings as you walk by.  Maybe you’ll even stop and rest, sit on a bench nearby.  They’ll pierce you in the heart.  Your love of life and other will deepen.  What do you see?

The inscription reads Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.  Just as true today as it was in 1963 when Martin Luther King uttered those words in his infamous I have a dream speech.  Maybe we’ve gone forward toward King’s vision in some ways yet it seems we have a ways to go as a human culture to achieve any sort of sane semblance of the real meaning behind those words.  After 50 years, at least we’ve constructed a monument to the man and his dream.  Here’s to embracing his dream as our dream.

A bit of local history in a city that is timeless.  We were staying fairly close to Rembrandt Square so getting here was easy.  Just another enchanting part of a remarkable city, perfect for getting around in.

Gracie.  From the Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.  The cemetery itself became more well known when it was featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.  Being quite close to Savannah, it’s easy to get to and I really enjoyed my time wandering around and looking at the elaborate grave sites.  I don’t know what it is about cemeteries, but I seem to be quite attracted to them.  I often go visit one and walk around to pay my respects in various cities I’m in.  I just find it fascinating to think about the lives that have come and gone.  We have such a relatively short time here.  No one gets out alive.

I recently read a great book about the civil war so I’m thinking strongly of Abe Lincoln.  What an amazing memorial in a city of memorials to a man who so affected the world.  We’ll never know, but I sometimes wonder how it all would have gone with another leader instead of Lincoln.  Would we have less racism?  More?  Would we be 2 countries?  We’ll never know.  I just know I got there early to see the sun rise and to beat the crowds.  Still, there were a few people around.  To get photos of a “clean” Lincoln without gawking tourists took some patience.  Oh, the book.  It’s The Lincoln Letter by William Martin.

I’m not sure what it is about statues, but no matter where I am or what kind of statue it is, I’m often compelled to capture some kind of image of it.  Why is that??  Maybe it’s a call to the history of the area.  Maybe it’s just someone’s art that I appreciate; an artist’s unite kind of thing.  OK, stop it.  I think I just like statues.  This one of Multatuli is in Amsterdam.

Abe Lincoln.  Such an iconic figure in American history relegated to the penny.  At least he sits in his place of prominence, overlooking all the goings on from the Potomac all the way up to the capital.  Here, I got up early to catch the morning light shining in on Mr. Lincoln and his throne.

Who doesn’t enjoy watching kids play?  I sure do.  Especially when two or more are playing together.  Young kids know how to live; engaged, alert, present, enjoying the exuberance of life, with the key word being joy.  I learn a lot about life by watching kids play.  When my 5 year old granddaughter and I go to the park, she always makes a point of seeking out other kids and making friends and just running and playing together.  Instant recognition.  The joy of life.  This particular scene is in downtown Phoenix, Arizona at St. Mary’s Basilica.
