snow

There was no snow upon arrival at South Lake Tahoe.  24 hours later there was a foot of new powder.  That’s life in the mountains.  What a wonderful time to be there in all its winter glory.  After coming back down from the Heavenly ski slopes I had a chance to wander around a bit.

It’s winter. Time to get to the slopes.  Play in the snow and feel winter’s charms.  One of the great benefits and enjoyments of living in California is the proximity of ocean and mountains.  On the one hand there’s the power of the Pacific Ocean just a few miles from home.  Beach walks and just hanging out at the ocean watching sea and sky is a never ending treat.  And now it’s winter.  The skies have dropped the slippery white powder many live for.  It’s not far from the ocean to get to the beauty of Tahoe and frolic in winter’s bounty.  Happy skiing.

I was not prepared for this!  Snow in the desert.  Cold.  Blustery.  I had the wrong gloves and my hands were freezing.  Yet… it was beautiful beyond any expectations I had.  I love when the weather presents a photogenic depth otherwise missing from an already beautiful scene.  This storm didn’t last all that long.  Maybe half an hour.  But, I could have reveled in the conditions for hours, comfortable or not.

I was thinking about a friend on the east coast.  It’s winter in all its glory there.  Cold, brash, harsh, filled with snow.  Not here in sunny CA.  I have to remind myself with images like this that winter, in the way that I think about winter, actually exists.  This was taken up in the Sierras one January day when snow was coming down hard.  It was so quiet.  I like the quiet, and hiking around in the storm gave me some sense of peace.  I like that too.

Much of the beauty of the Sierra mountains in fall is its accessibility.  Of course I love to traipse around the woods and countryside, but to those who don’t, just taking a drive along highway 395 that skirts the eastern side of this incredible mountain range will work out just fine.  In fact, no matter what season, it’s a great choice for a scenic getaway.  This is Conway Summit, just north of the Mono Lake overlook and town of Lee Vining, gateway to the eastern entrance to majestic Yosemite.

Can you smell the pine tree scent?  Hear the quiet?  I can.  It’s so peaceful and relaxing here.  The trail isn’t even that steep.  Depending on how far you want to go it’s a relaxing day hike or the start of an adventurous mountain back pack.  It’s on the Kings Canyon National Park Rae lakes loop trail at the end of the road.  I hiked for a few hours, went past the infamous mist falls, then up to Paradise Valley, turned around after a relaxing lunch, and went back.  A nice day hike indeed.  Very few other people, following a raging, swollen river much of the way.  So beautiful!

I had hiked up the trail past Vernal Falls and then Nevada Falls.  I just kept going.  It was threatening to snow up here above 6,000 feet but I just didn’t care.  I was hiking alone, having a great time.  In the most visited National Park we have I ran into nobody out here, just following the Merced River further up towards its source.  At times I would just stop and listen to the quiet.  Everything was so still and frozen.  Even though it was completely overcast there was a brightness from the white snow.  Then, while hiking, I saw this singular smooth rock in the middle of the mostly frozen river.  It seemed to be asking for just a little bit of space within the freezing water.  And there was just enough river flow hitting it to keep it clear.  For now, at least.

It’s December.  Though not official yet, the winter months are here.  The sun is low in the horizon.  The light is soft.  Yes, it’s full speed ahead into the holiday season, but the natural world comes alive in the cold beauty of hibernation.

My annual trip to the desert this year was fortunate.  To the Palm Springs area I went and I was there during some interesting, precipitous weather.  As the clouds were breaking up, exposing the fresh snow on the surrounding mountains I bolted from the comfort of my sisters new home and took off with camera trying to find an appropriate foreground.  The sun was not too far from hiding itself again behind clouds and then setting behind the mountains, so time was of the essence.  After driving a few minutes I spied this desert colored church.  Perfect.

Are you someone who likes snow or is by now completely fed up with it?  Since it doesn’t fall where I live, I rather like it.  I can go and have my experience and then leave.  But, for those of you who live with it a good portion of the winter I can imagine growing rather tired of it.  But traveling up to Lake Tahoe at 6,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains I expect and even want snow!  And I’m glad I went here first upon arrival.  Later this night, it snowed hard for hours and I couldn’t even get here with my wimpy city car.  But here, I loved hiking around the snow in my water-proof boots, cutting trails, lugging my camera and tripod around, hunting for angles, imagining snow angels.  A lovely winters day.
