I’ve been here a number of times and enjoy it each time I go.  Down by the wharf, it’s an easy place to get to, if you can find the parking.  If you like having a drink, it’s the place known for inventing the Irish Coffee.  A little coffee, some sugar and of course the Irish whiskey.  Nice in the often cool San Francisco climate.  But really, almost any place in San Francisco is worth checking out, at least once.

Leaving work on my way out to a crowded freeway, I always pass this spot on the bay.  Across from Sausalito it looks out onto the tips of the Golden Gate Bridge and just a bit south, onto San Francisco itself.  This evening, though, the fog had settled in.  The infamous Bay Area fog, getting sucked into the Gate and the City by the warmer air inland.  Yes, it makes everything cooler, colder even, but it sure makes for a great subject matter.

San Francisco.  In most cities, you have to know where to go.  In San Francisco, just start walking around and you’ll bump into just about everything you could imagine: bars, restaurants, music venues, views, sights, famous icons.  You get the picture.  Here, I’d just dropped my wife off at the airport and while wandering through the city to cross the golden gate I decided to hike up and through Bernal Heights Park that I hadn’t done before.  Glad I did.  What a great sight!

Yes, this is the Golden Gate Bridge; not a view typically seen, but it is there.  Far from its iconic status it is also a mode of transportation into a very exciting city.  One evening I was tooling around, looking for angles I hadn’t seen before.  I parked my car in the parking lot just on the north side of the bridge before sunset and walked around on the trails.  Though not filled with the more famous views, the fact that the sun was shining its last light on the city and the clouds were starting to turn color made for a different and serendipitous view.

I’ve always wondered what the fascination is with this little section of San Francisco.  There are always an interesting array of folks gawking and taking photos.  I imagine a master marketer, scheming for ways to get people out west, or to this particular section of the city.  So, I include myself in the tourist line and fire away.  I was the only one with a tripod, though.

What a great place to walk!  In the hills above Tiburon, California in Marin county is a large open space with trails and 360 degree views that won’t quit.  Depending on where you walk, there’s a different vantage point; of the golden gate, San Francisco, the east bay.  It’s city planning at its best as it could easily be covered with large, estate homes.  But we need great places to walk or take photos!  Thank you Marin county.

It’s so much fun to be in San Francisco, especially at night.  The city by the bay oozes its charm in almost every little nook and neighborhood you choose to explore.  The hills, the bridges, the fog.  Maybe I’m too familiar with it and showing my bias, but I never tire of going there, being there.  There’s always an image popping into the foreground, begging to be captured.  A million times seen and yet, still, it’s a new day, a fresh set of circumstances, a different light.  Of course, that’s true of anywhere, but, when in San Francisco and a bright moon is glowing above Coit Tower while the Bay Bridge winks at you… No wonder people leave their heart there.

It was so nice here in the Bay area last week.  I can look out my office window over San Francisco Bay to the city and keep an eye on the weather.  The light in winter is so much softer than other times of year.  So, I took off around 4:00 and headed over the Richmond bridge to the east bay, then across the Bay bridge and got off on Treasure Island, that perfect little piece of land just in front of San Francisco.  Not many people milling around.  Good.  I was mostly focusing on the City when the light of and over Alcatraz caught my eye.  A gorgeous night of light and color.  Perfect for a prison break.

I was tired.  I’d just flown back into Oakland from Austin after the birth of my granddaughter.  I really just wanted to go home which was still an hour and a half away.  But, there it was; an incredible light and storm over San Francisco.  I couldn’t just go home.  So, I got onto the bay bridge and got off on Treasure Island;  a perfect place to watch/experience the unfolding dance of nature and architecture.  Sure glad I didn’t go right home.

It’s America’s Cup racing time again this week on San Francisco Bay.  It’s a perfect venue for watching these unique sailing vessels skim over the water.  And skim they do.  It’s sure not your grandpa’s kind of sailing.  Sometimes it hardly seems like they’re racing but in actuality they’re moving quite fast.  It really is fun to watch with perfect views out to the boats, bay and iconic SF icons.
