rafting

Rafting down the Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon is a monumental experience.  The water’s ice cold and often quite frisky.  The rock most often a rusty shade of red.  But, what’s most impressive is the size of the walls and how small I felt inside this immense cavern.  The timeless quiet, the constant flow of water, the movement of the raft.  Nothing compares to the feeling of being so small inside something so big.

I’d already gone through the rapids in the smaller whitewater raft.  After getting through, we stopped in the calmer water and watched and waited for everyone else to get through.  Quickly, I got my camera out of its waterproof box and steadied myself as best I could while bobbing around on the flowing Colorado River, selected a fast shutter speed and caught the big oar boat heading our way.  They sure looked like they were having fun!

That’s what journeying down the Colorado River is; blending and morphing into everything that’s there.  There’s no distinction between the rock and canyon walls and river and sky and person immersed inside it all.  Human and nature blended as one.  That’s really what rafting into and through the Grand Canyon is all about; accepting the flow of the river and just being a part of it.

What a ride!  This is Upset Rapid on the Colorado River in the heart of the Grand Canyon.  What a ride we had.  15 days of the timeless and changing landscape of one of the world’s great natural wonders.  Sometimes the water was raging, like here at Upset.  Sometimes the water was calm and we had to oar our way along.  Always, it was incredibly beautiful and invigorating.
