pyramids

Upon arrival at our hotel in Giza, a friend and I immediately went exploring.  We walked up the hill toward the pyramids we could see the tops of and Wow!  What a sight!  We found someone who could lead us out through the gate.  Yes, it’s highly regulated yet anything can be negotiated with a bit cash.  We were both extremely excited and in awe of the grandeur of what we saw.  This is one of the first unobstructed views we had.

This icon, the Sphinx, is so huge, so ominous.  It just sits there, regally, gazing out over the desert; a sentry for the pyramids, on guard for invading marauders who would rather destroy what was sacred.  Or, at least, so I imagine.  Actually, it was quite incredible to be there from before sunrise, without hordes of tourists.  Just our little group of 25, alone amongst these seemingly alive “beings” on the Giza plateau.  Whether quietly singing or meditating or imagining, we were all in awe, blessed to be thrust into ancient times and tingling mystery.

Still standing after all these years.  Almost seems like a miracle.  Many of the pyramids in this area of Egypt were either crumbling or in a certain stage of pre-crumble.  But that just seems to make them more interesting and mysterious.  Thus my friend Fort’s sit-down meditation.  Maybe that’s just a way to get inside it.  Get still and quiet enough, internally, to move into the heart of what’s there.  Now that I think about it, he did have a little wry smile and glow when he arrived back at the bus.  Hmmmm?

I know Las Vegas is quite polarizing.  It’s known as sin city by many; gaudy, too bright, corrupt, etc.  Yet, it’s such a desired destination by so many others.  Whether for gambling or live entertainment or something else it attracts huge crowds of people.  So, are these adult theme parks sacrilege or modern contemporary art?  I didn’t spend a dime on gambling but I sure appreciated the architecture.  What a visual blast!

We all got up early one morning and through the influence of our guides were able to get into the area of the Giza pyramids and sphinx at sunrise before any other people were allowed to get in.  It was incredible being there at that time of day without the masses of other people milling around.  After hanging out inside the sphinx, we were taken to a not-so-much visited place where we could practice our movement meditation in perfect view of the pyramids and rising sun.  It was a special morning as the sun seemingly split the Khafre pyramid, energizing the whole complex in response to our movements.
