palm trees

It’s nice being in the desert in winter.  Finally, there’s a chance to find some cloud cover as opposed to the constant blue skies you find most of the time.  And the temperature.  So pleasant.  On this morning, I headed out before sunrise and spent some time wandering around Papago park in Phoenix.  This stand of palm trees caught me eye and the mostly calm reflection in the lake provided a rich fullness to the serenity of the scene.

A large park in the middle of the city.  Love it.  We need all the natural spaces we can get.  When I stayed in Tempe I decided to get up early and head on over to Papago Park in Phoenix.  A beautiful, expansive desert park.  I love watching the sun rise and found a place within the desert rocks that looked down on other parts of the park.  Sure like the perspective of height.

I was tired.  I’d been wandering around downtown Phoenix for hours and ready to sit for a while.  I’d just reached the car when, of course, on the other side of the street I noticed this scene of palm trees set against the downtown architecture.  Well, one or two more photos won’t kill me.  Later in my travels I had many of my images stolen as my empty camera bag, except for memory chips, was stolen out of my car.  At least I enjoyed my time.

I know it doesn’t really look that warm, but it is; certainly warmer than most of the northern hemisphere.  In Costa Rica we would walk the beach in front of our cabin and laugh.  How wonderful it is to be walking in the sand, carefree, not stuck in traffic somewhere, feeling the tropical sun on my back as it wanders in and out of the various cloud formations.  I know some of you are stuck in the cold and snow, and others just feel stuck.  We can always dream and even plan for a different scene.tropical-beach-2-1

When driving down the road, do you ever notice those signs that say “Historical marker ahead”?  I do.  I don’t always stop but sometimes I do.  If I’m feeling patient and not in a hurry to get somewhere I enjoy stopping and imagining the scene being as it once was.  That’s what happened here.  I was driving down the road, going somewhere, when I saw the sign for “Air Museum”.  I especially like to stop at these places when out shooting photos, so…. I stopped.  I wonder who flew it, if it was used in combat or just recognizance.  Ready for takeoff, captain!

Yes, I was on the golf course, playing golf, when I took this shot.  But, for me the image is not so much about golf as it is the mountains, and the desert and the palm trees and the dappled sun light.  In other words, just being this kind of beautiful environment is the reference point.  The desert; a wonderful place to be in the winter.

Cars rushing by.  Palm trees waving.  Casinos calling out, wanting you to come in off the street and make yourself comfortable.  Spend, I mean win, some quick cash.  In fact, you can leave behind of much as you want.  Why not all of it!  Well… no, I think not.  I have to admit, though, I love the ambiance, the diversity of people, the architectural maze to get lost in.  And all within walking distance.  Quite convenient is Las Vegas.

My annual trip to the desert this year was fortunate.  To the Palm Springs area I went and I was there during some interesting, precipitous weather.  As the clouds were breaking up, exposing the fresh snow on the surrounding mountains I bolted from the comfort of my sisters new home and took off with camera trying to find an appropriate foreground.  The sun was not too far from hiding itself again behind clouds and then setting behind the mountains, so time was of the essence.  After driving a few minutes I spied this desert colored church.  Perfect.
