okefenokee

When I arrived at the Okefenokee swamp it had grown overcast and was approaching dark.  There was hardly anyone around and it was quite muggy.  Just a couple hours to explore its mystery.  And mysterious it was.  Maybe it was the ominous weather, but it truly was a bit spooky.  Perfect.  I managed to get around and walk through the brush and along the trails when I ran into this old homestead.  Nobody around.  It could have been 100 years ago.  Maybe they were off looking for alligator meat.

Bleak.  Ominous.  Humid.  Eerie.  Just a few words that describe an evening at Okefenokee Swamp.  No one around.  The Ibis birds arriving in waves into the trees around me.  The humidity so high it felt like rain.  Was an alligator lying in wait in the channel just beneath my feet, waiting for the right moment to pounce?  And then the lightning started with the accompanying thunder.  I stood and watched for a while and then headed back down the trail while I could still see.
