moon

Heading into town on a full moon night.  What a shame.  But, the family was hungry and since I was too I chose to nix my plans to head out of town a ways to capture full moon images.  Well, the moon was going in and out from behind the clouds and from our parking lot was right next to the bank building, so, I grabbed the tripod and snapped a few times.  Saved me from waiting for our table and I still got to eat well.  Great tradeoff.

One evening, not long ago, I stepped out onto my back deck and looked up.  Wow.  An incredibly prominent ring around the moon was not only visible, but quite bright, as well.  So, duh, I set up camera and tripod to see what I could capture.  I love the night sky, especially in winter, and I don’t make nearly enough images of something I have only to look up to see.  Well, on this night, it was all here: moon with ring; the twins Castor and Pollux of Gemini inside the ring on the left; orion half in and half out, with its belt right on the ring in the lower right; and Jupiter just outside the ring, shining brightly in the upper right.  The blessings of a heavenly angel shining its cosmic energies down to Earth.

The City, of course, meaning San Francisco, the City by the Bay; a visual, photographic treat.  Not to mention a fun and lively place to be.  Here, it really doesn’t take any hunting for an itinerary of things to do or the laborious reading of strangers trip reviews to have a grand time.  You just have to walk around a bit and within a block or two you will undoubtedly run into an interesting little shop or surprisingly good restaurant.  This shot was taken from Russian Hill.

It’s hard to beat the summer and fall seasons in the Pacific Northwest.  Other times of year it’s a tossup.  This image of the Seattle skyline was taken in the fall from gasworks park on the north side of Lake Union.  The park is an interesting place in and of itself, and I was there exploring the park in the late afternoon, so I decided to hang out a bit more and see what showed up around sunset.  Voila!  Clouds with color, the moon, and the beautiful Seattle skyline.

Another photo from my home town.  I try not to post too many from Bellingham as I don’t want to be so biased as to my appreciation for the area.  However, maybe I’ll post a few more.

GP, of course, is Georgia Pacific.  It’s been closed down now for some years, but it used to be the large industry in town.  Until, I think, so many people complained about the constant smell, and the pollution in the bay become so great as to they pretty much had to shut it down.  Now, it’s slowly being dismantled and hopefully something good will replace it in time.  But, in the evening, round about sunset, with a hazy moon and some soft light, it does make for an interesting non-polluting foreground.

I love a colorful sky.  My favorite is the combo of deep blue and orange.  That’s probably why this is one of my favorite photos.  It was taken from the top of Sentinel Dome in one of my favorite locations; Yosemite National Park.  Anywhere in Yosemite is great.  I could have stayed here and just stared at the sky all night long.  Then, all I would have had to do is turn around at dawn and watch the sun rise…  Well, I can dream, can’t I?

In the spring of  ’08 we were outside walking around and enjoying the evening ambiance of Cologne, Germany.  Now the Cologne cathedral is almost always in sight of wherever you go there, but on this evening I noticed that if I found the right place I could position the moon directly between the 2 spires.   Luckily, there was a small grassy knoll with an unencumbered opening looking directly to the cathedral.  Now in those days I was not traveling with my tripod so I just set my camera down on the grass, found something to prop it up just a bit and fired away.

I love Joshua Tree.  The landscape there is so surreal.  In combination with the quiet, it’s a perfect setup for a totally unique experience.  Believe me, it was COLD out this morning.  The previous evening I had set up my tent a couple of miles from the trail head.  In the middle of the night the wind picked up to the degree that the strong gusts were blowing the tent into my sleepy face and waking me up.  The temperature plunged as well.  About 4:00 AM I decided not to fight it and got up, broke the tent down and headed out into a stiff head wind with the temperature around 30!  It was cold!…. but not cold enough to stop and set up for a photo or two.
