There was no snow upon arrival at South Lake Tahoe.  24 hours later there was a foot of new powder.  That’s life in the mountains.  What a wonderful time to be there in all its winter glory.  After coming back down from the Heavenly ski slopes I had a chance to wander around a bit.

It’s winter. Time to get to the slopes.  Play in the snow and feel winter’s charms.  One of the great benefits and enjoyments of living in California is the proximity of ocean and mountains.  On the one hand there’s the power of the Pacific Ocean just a few miles from home.  Beach walks and just hanging out at the ocean watching sea and sky is a never ending treat.  And now it’s winter.  The skies have dropped the slippery white powder many live for.  It’s not far from the ocean to get to the beauty of Tahoe and frolic in winter’s bounty.  Happy skiing.

It’s December.  Though not official yet, the winter months are here.  The sun is low in the horizon.  The light is soft.  Yes, it’s full speed ahead into the holiday season, but the natural world comes alive in the cold beauty of hibernation.

Are you someone who likes snow or is by now completely fed up with it?  Since it doesn’t fall where I live, I rather like it.  I can go and have my experience and then leave.  But, for those of you who live with it a good portion of the winter I can imagine growing rather tired of it.  But traveling up to Lake Tahoe at 6,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains I expect and even want snow!  And I’m glad I went here first upon arrival.  Later this night, it snowed hard for hours and I couldn’t even get here with my wimpy city car.  But here, I loved hiking around the snow in my water-proof boots, cutting trails, lugging my camera and tripod around, hunting for angles, imagining snow angels.  A lovely winters day.

I awoke well before dawn in order to take a nice hot shower.  I knew I needed to warm myself before putting on the many layers of clothing I’d need to wander around on the lake shore in the 10 degree cold.  I do love being out there, it’s just the preamble and gathering momentum that is the most difficult.  So, dressed warmly with coffee in hand I drove down the road a ways, parked the car and walked the 10 minutes in the dark down to the lake.  A perfect winter’s day.  Cold, windless, still, quiet.  Now feeling alert and totally awake I almost melted into the landscape, its serenity deeply felt.  Watching and being with the growing light is meditation at its finest.

Wow.  We just past the winter solstice and it’s almost Christmas.  Winter….it conjures up images of snow and cold.  Growing up in the NW I didn’t really like winter.  Too hungry for warmth and sun.  Now, being older and living in California with warmth and sun, I really appreciate winter.  I know many people find it comes in too harshly and stays too long.  But for me there’s a power to it that I don’t see with the other seasons.  This scene is at Squaw Valley, up in the Sierra mountains near Lake Tahoe.  It’s snowing and we’re out walking in winter’s strength.

When I travel, I love to get up before dawn and go to a beautiful place to be with the sunrise.  From my explorations the day before, I thought this place on the edge of the lake at South Tahoe would be just fine.  After a month of no snow, it snowed like crazy the day before, then cleared off.  This morning broke mostly clear, crisp and COLD with a few thick bands of storm clouds hovering over the mountains, just perfect for sunrise reflections.  I’m not sure how the geese do it,  sleeping right on the frozen part of the lake.  I’d already been there for some time, waiting in the quiet solitude so I didn’t seem to disturb them.  We never spoke but I enjoyed their presence.  There’s such a sense of peace in the cold dawn in the mountains in winter.
