There’s something about watching young kids playing and having fun.  Maybe it reminds me of times gone by and my own youth.  Or spending those countless hours watching my own kids make their own play.  Or times spent now watching my grandkids play.  Maybe it’s the ever constant flow of time and life that touches my awareness and helps me to realize and appreciate with gratitude the beauty of life.  What a ride we have here.  It reminds me to play more and enjoy the time we do have on Earth.

It’s summer.  The kids are out of school.  Time for sailing lessons.  Every year at this time these little sail boats cluster in the bay across from San Francisco with their eager learners and go through the gyrations of learning how to navigate a boat with the wind.  They’re fun to watch.  Sometimes funny.  What’s nice is that they’re out in the sunshine and elements, moving their bodies, creating a connection the natural world, learning the idiosyncrasies of the wind and how move with it rather than fight it.  Aikido on the water.  Ballet with a boat.  I watch from my office.

This shot reminds me of yesterday’s Yom Kippur.  The blessing of new life and the release that comes from forgiveness.  May we all have a great life blessed with awe and joy and good will.

Even out here in the Western US I’ve been going through the winter health doldrums.  Looking at some kids enjoying themselves in the coolness of Austin’s Barton creek looks refreshing.  So, I’ll look at this and remember the freshness, freedom and playfulness of summer.  Here’s to our health!

Hey!  I’m home!  After extensive days traveling, on the road, hiking, visiting and just plain being away from home, I’m back home; where the heart is home.  Back to work, gardening, photo processing, sorting, fall home projects, and on and on home.  I’m promising myself to post here more often now, whether anyone’s listening or not.  But, I’ll keep posting, regardless.  Hey, I’m home!

Are you one of those people who can take a word or phrase and immediately write a meaningful and personal poem about it?  I’m sure not.  I need to take it in for a bit, contemplate, let the feeling and thoughts come in and then take some interpretive time to form them into words in the right order so that they actually mean something.  Not the Poem Lady.  She sits in her chair at the Hollywood street fair/farmers market with her old-style portable typewriter.  She hears your content request and, seemingly instantaneously, the words enter somewhere, exiting through her deft finger tips and out onto a small sheet of paper.  You’ve given her the subject, she delivers your message for the day, you pay her what you will.  A circular symbiosis of the soul.

Who doesn’t enjoy watching kids play?  I sure do.  Especially when two or more are playing together.  Young kids know how to live; engaged, alert, present, enjoying the exuberance of life, with the key word being joy.  I learn a lot about life by watching kids play.  When my 5 year old granddaughter and I go to the park, she always makes a point of seeking out other kids and making friends and just running and playing together.  Instant recognition.  The joy of life.  This particular scene is in downtown Phoenix, Arizona at St. Mary’s Basilica.

Going to South Africa is often imagined as wild animals or contentious racism or 3rd world poverty, but the most compelling experiences and images for me was incredible humility and warmth of the people, including the charm and spunk of the kids.  No hustle or bustle, just an ease and acceptance of life at the pace that it is.  Acceptance and acknowledgement of what is.  Now there’s a concept.

Kids do the darndest things.  I know plenty of moms who wouldn’t dare let their kids climb on a fence barrier to get a better view of the goings on way down below on the river.  I’m not sure where this kids mom was.  Probably home while he was with dad.  Dads often let kids explore a bit more, take more risks.  I guess moms prefer safety where dads like adventure.  He was up there for a while, too.  I finally turned away to focus on other things.  I was on my own adventure and wanted to see more myself.  Portland’s a great place for walking a viewing the river.  This kid had a nice spot.

Wow!  What an adventure I had in South Africa!  The people so friendly, vital and alive.  We spent almost all our time in rural areas well north of Johannesburg and what a treat it was.  The vitality of the people, the land, the animals is infectiously palpable.  They are genuine, heartfelt, humble.  No excessive energy in reaching for the tourist dollar.  Wares and art, if around, are simply and cordially offered.  The beauty and energy of the land and its people reverberates deeply in my soul.

Here, on this day, we visited two primary schools where some of the kids performed for us; singing, dancing, poetry, a play.  All done with full participation and much energy.  All the kids were so interested in us and revelled in a simple acknowledgement and touch of the hands.  A beautiful day indeed.
