Nothing not to like about Joshua Tree.  It’s so unique and ethereal.  Hanging out one evening, the light and change of colors was so dramatic I was laughing for joy.

I was not prepared for this!  Snow in the desert.  Cold.  Blustery.  I had the wrong gloves and my hands were freezing.  Yet… it was beautiful beyond any expectations I had.  I love when the weather presents a photogenic depth otherwise missing from an already beautiful scene.  This storm didn’t last all that long.  Maybe half an hour.  But, I could have reveled in the conditions for hours, comfortable or not.

Believe it or not, it snowed earlier in this day.  The sun felt so good.  Not hot.  Just wonderfully warm.  Melting away the chill of the morning.  I was walking along a trail after visiting one of the old mines in the park, continually awed by the beauty of the area.  The cold was lifting and the warmth penetrating my weary muscles.  Can you feel it?

It’s so amazing to be here in amongst the Joshua trees.  I fall into complete awe every time I’m there.  Of course, I’ve never been to the moon, but, I get a sense that this is how I’d feel if I ever did go.  It’s so quiet and unique.  As I did on this particular hike, being off the roads is especially inspiring; wandering in and around and through this incredible topography.

Absolutely one of my favorite places to be is Joshua Tree National Park.  The landscape and quiet is incredible!  Certainly not as well know as Death Valley or Yosemite, but every bit as impressive to explore.

Joshua Tree is one of my favorite places to explore.  The uniqueness of the land is stunning.  And to spend the night here in the quiet of the desert tops it off.  I chose not to stay at one of the campgrounds and simply set up my small tent in an out-of-the-way spot so as not to make any lasting impact on the land.  I woke before dawn on an incredibly chilly morning.  It was COLD out and, of course, I neglected to bring gloves.  Why would I bring gloves when going to the desert?   Anyway, I started hiking and the sun continued to rise and the beauty of the land came to life.

With even moderate conditions, deserts seem to put out the most incredible array of colors in low light.  Here at Joshua Tree National Park in the southern California desert this was certainly the case.  This was the first time I’d been there and I was so excited by the sheer beauty of the moonscape-like topography of the area I was laughing and crying at the same time.  It seems I could barely move, or was it that I was moving so quickly, I was so enamored.  I’ve been back twice since this first encounter not quite 4 years ago.

I love Joshua Tree National Park.  It feels more like a moonscape, though, than a park.  And that’s really what gives it its flavor.  On this cold February day, after I had packed up my tent in the middle of the night because it was so windy, a bit of a weather system came quickly through.  It began snowing overhead, yet to the east it was still clear with blue skies.  It was awesome to behold.  Snowing in the desert!
