Setting up a tripod inside the casino was a bit tricky.  As soon as I was spotted I was told No!  Can’t take photos of people gambling.  Don’t want to incriminate anyone.  No worries.  I managed to get off a few shots inside to no ones harm.

It’s not called the Ahwahnee anymore, but it still is to me.  It’s good old impersonal corporate greed that’s taken the traditional name away.  But, whatever the name, the Ahwahnee is still a beautiful place to be when not enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the park itself.  To call Yosemite a park is even a misnomer of sorts.  It’s so much more.  It’s mother nature at her finest and the way that the Ahwahnee fits in to it all is a beautiful example of how a manmade structure can elegantly harmonize with the beauty of nature.

Walking in style.  Bathed by luxurious beauty.  Yep.  I’m talking about… you guessed it.  Las Vegas.  Maybe others would call it overindulgence or something in that vein.  I just call it choice and another place to play in a world filled with places to explore, both natural and man made.  Of course, who’s to say man made is not natural.  We are, after all, part of nature.  It is true, usually I’d prefer the natural world of trees and rock and water but it’s a nice change to head to the pace and style of what other people have created for the rest of us to enjoy.  Hey, it’s Vegas.  I certainly enjoyed.

When I go somewhere relatively new, at least for photographic purposes, I always spend time beforehand researching the web and looking at maps for places that might be interesting to see.  If it looks interesting enough to go and be there, then I’m sure there will be some interesting photographic images that show themselves; like a sculptor chipping away at the stone to reveal the figure inside.  That’s what happened here and how I even managed to wind up at the Biltmore in the first place.  It looked like an interesting place, at it was!

I don’t remember how many floors up this is, but doesn’t it seem like an odd place to check in?  I don’t ever remember checking into a hotel anywhere other than on the ground floor.  But, this is Vegas; original, quirky, bizarre.  All in a good way, mind you.  And the view from here is certainly grand.  A nice lounge is immediately adjacent.  Not that one is ever far away.  I liked the Mandarin.  Even the hallways exude elegance.  The whole place is that way.  Just one big opulent work of art and design.

Though I didn’t stay here, it certainly is a great place to explore.  The inside is somewhat 4 sided with a large atrium in the center and a huge American flag hanging from the top.  It’s quite elegant inside and I could have sworn I saw Bat Masterson roaming through the lobby mixing with a lot of other gentlemen in 3 piece suits and top hats.

I love wandering around Las Vegas.  Every twist and turn can take you into another setting of city art, or into a completely different hotel or scene than the one just left behind.  When I rolled into town on this day I pulled into the first parking lot I found and just started walking.  I found my way into the Mandalay Bay and after some time inside I found myself at the pool, alone.  Though a nice enough day, it was too cold in February for any swimming around.  The late afternoon sun was coming through just perfect so I set up in silence and fired away.

The Mandarin hotel in Vegas is another one of those artistic/visual feasts.  Wherever I wandered, and I did wander a bit, a photo was begging to happen.  In fact just being in Vegas with an intent of photography is like being inside a large piece of granite that’s just waiting for you to make the cuts that brings it to life.  Does that make sense?  Well, anyway, the Mandarin Oriental piece of granite was a nice place to wander around in and create photo sculpture.
