Halloween’s almost here and I can’t help but think of the ghoulishness of a good cemetery.  It still light when walking around Bonaventure, but still it was great to explore.  Plenty of interesting creepiness with the huge monuments and Spanish moss.  Boo!

One of the more interesting features of Death Valley is the way the landscape has flipped and folded in on itself to form this unique terrain.  It takes a lot of water as well and being the desert that it is, well, it’s pretty alluring and makes a great subject.  Getting up before the sun rises is always a great choice for catching how the dawning light will play on whatever subject chosen.  That being said, Death Valley has become one of my favorite winter destinations for exploring this grab-bag of spectacular topography.

I love the color and character of the older docks, holding their sea warn buildings out of the salt water.  Walking the shore trail in Monterey provides a lot of an older ocean front scene.  It’s easy to find beauty to frame inside a viewfinder.  Just walk, look and dream.

Look.  Up in the sky.  If in the middle of a large cities downtown, you’ll probably have to look through any number of huge buildings.  Never having worked in one myself, I’ve always wondered what all those stories are for.  How much office work does one city need?  And these buildings are tall and many.  So many financial, legal and insurance people I guess.  Good for them, but I’ll stay street level in the cities and get up high in the mountains.

It’s summer.  Time for backpacking the high country, wherever that is for you.  For me, that almost always means the mighty high Sierra that runs along the eastern border of California.  For those who’ve never been, it’s so hard to describe the beauty, ruggedness and majesty that lives in those mountains.  Here, we’re approaching the Rae Lakes basin on the eastern side of Kings Canyon National Park, looking down from the almost 12,000 foot Glenn Pass.  An amazing stretch of country and the Rae Lakes area is one great place to make camp and explore.

It’s not called the Ahwahnee anymore, but it still is to me.  It’s good old impersonal corporate greed that’s taken the traditional name away.  But, whatever the name, the Ahwahnee is still a beautiful place to be when not enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the park itself.  To call Yosemite a park is even a misnomer of sorts.  It’s so much more.  It’s mother nature at her finest and the way that the Ahwahnee fits in to it all is a beautiful example of how a manmade structure can elegantly harmonize with the beauty of nature.

Walking in style.  Bathed by luxurious beauty.  Yep.  I’m talking about… you guessed it.  Las Vegas.  Maybe others would call it overindulgence or something in that vein.  I just call it choice and another place to play in a world filled with places to explore, both natural and man made.  Of course, who’s to say man made is not natural.  We are, after all, part of nature.  It is true, usually I’d prefer the natural world of trees and rock and water but it’s a nice change to head to the pace and style of what other people have created for the rest of us to enjoy.  Hey, it’s Vegas.  I certainly enjoyed.

Sometimes I feel it’s unfair I get to work at a place that offers the views I get to look at.  The sail boats, the sea birds and the sweeping skyscapes that sometimes occur, even in sunny California.  To have it all happen over the recognizable city of San Francisco… just frosting on the cake.

Roaming an unfamiliar city at night is both exciting and ominous.  When wandering around Charleston one evening I decided to take the lessor known route down this seemingly endless alley.  I really didn’t know where I’d end up or who was in it ready to take off with my camera gear.  Was someone hiding in the shadows?  Is it safe in here?  Fortunately, the path was empty.  My heart quieted down and I found a nice spot to quench my thirst.

Fairhaven is the transportation hub of Bellingham.  Trains, busses and the Alaska ferry all converge here.  One morning while visiting my dad, I got up before dawn and went down to the terminal to see what I could see.  Not much going on down there in the sleepy hours of the morning but as it grew light the activity picked up.  The train arrived from Vancouver on its way south to unknown parts.  I wandered down in front of the big engine.  It was awfully impressive from that angle.
