One of the most enjoyable things about hunting for wild mushrooms is the sheer satisfaction of walking around, somewhat aimlessly, in the fall forest.  I’ve never been lost, but I’ve managed to wander so far off the trail that I’m not sure where I’ll wind up.  Chanterelle hunting is my favorite, but you never know what waits down below in the moist rich humus of the Earth in the fall.

A true medieval castle.  I can only imagine living inside her back in the day.  Surrounded by cliffs and forest it must have been a beast to construct, as well.  I’m sure one of the reasons it’s still here in such good shape is its natural defensive locale.  It seems out of the loop even for todays standards.  Was it worth fighting for?  Maybe no one of any significant prominence lived here.  Hard to believe, though, given such a massive and incredible building.

I love hiking where there is no trail, just traipsing through the forest.  During the fall, after the rains start, it’s even more of a thrill to follow my nose and legs in search of the forest mushroom.  It’s not as easy now living in a drier climate, and I certainly don’t get out as much.  Still, I always find the hunt exciting.  Maybe it’s some genetic thing left over from the days of needing to hunt for food.  When not wondering, I can always just go to the forest and look.

It’s fall again!  I love this time of year.  Much of the time it’s very soft, especially compared to the height of summer and its intensity.  The light is softer, the darkness of day slowly fading, the colors in nature turning inward, readying itself for winters slumber.  It’s also a great time to be in the mountains, where scenes like this abound.

If you know where this bridge leads to please speak up.  I’m sure it goes somewhere, but where.

Coastal Oregon along Hwy. 101 is not all about the pacific ocean.  On the eastern side of the road is just as interesting and scenic.  Although you may have to take a little side road for a mile or so.  But, it’s always well worth it as much of the coastline is filled with interesting lakes and rivers and bridges.  This one is between Florence and Coos Bay.

I love traipsing about different forests looking for mushrooms.  The cool mossy undergrowth, navigating around fallen trees, not really knowing where I’m going, but going there anyway.  Mushrooms have a way of hiding beneath fallen fir needles or thick moss and it’s always exciting to stop, look down and around and there, just a few steps more is something to behold.  Edible or not, it’s always so satisfying; kind of like going to a zoo without cages where you have to hunt for what you’re looking for.
