Highway 1 in California is one of those roads that’s a must do.  No matter where you catch on, it’s a scenic joy ride.  I don’t live far from a section of it and I always enjoy the drive.  I’ve driven by Tomales Bay many a time and even kayaked across it.  Believe me it’s not always this calm, but when it is it can be as glass.  The fog descends, the light mist appears.  Pt. Reyes becomes more distant.

San Francisco is known for its fog and this morning was no different.  I had been out shooting some night shots and wasn’t ready to head home so I just kept driving around, looking for more; more scenes, more views, more angles.  Sometimes I just can’t stop myself and this was one of those days.  As the daylight increased, so did the fog and I was getting frustrated.  After all, I was making an effort to be out, why couldn’t I see?  Patience, just a little patience.  And then, the fog started lifting.

I was driving up the winding coast highway, seeing what I could see and just enjoying the drive and vistas.  As I’m often wont to do, I pulled over to admire the view.  Though I live less than an hour away, I’m always blown away at the beauty and power of the ocean and this area in particular.

Yes, it’s foggy and quite cool in South Africa.  Not quite my imagination of what Africa is, but now that I’ve seen it, I see it as a lucky break.  What an incredible setting.  We drove up a very rustic road to around 4000 feet to get to the Leshiba Wilderness, set in a valley in the middle of a ominous mountain range.  The place is home to many wild animals and you don’t have to drive on safari to be in and amongst them.  On this cool and blustery afternoon we simply walked down the road and ran into whatever was there.  Coming around a bend in the road, the view opened up to this field of African bush and there they were.  Of course, as soon as they spotted us, they took off running.  They sure are beautiful in the wild.

Leaving work on my way out to a crowded freeway, I always pass this spot on the bay.  Across from Sausalito it looks out onto the tips of the Golden Gate Bridge and just a bit south, onto San Francisco itself.  This evening, though, the fog had settled in.  The infamous Bay Area fog, getting sucked into the Gate and the City by the warmer air inland.  Yes, it makes everything cooler, colder even, but it sure makes for a great subject matter.

Fall is such an incredible time of color and change.  The natural world is on its way to death; only to begin anew again next spring, I might add.  But now, it’s autumn.  I’m enjoying the warm days and cool nights here in my part of California.  And my little part includes the too-numerous-to-mention wine vineyards, in whatever season always an incredible subject for a photographic image or two.  This one comes from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County.

I was in Monterey.  It was a beautiful, relatively warm late winter day.  Lots of people, happily wandering around, exploring the best of what the area has to offer; an easy stroll along the Pacific, plenty of shops and restaurants, the aquarium.  When I had my fill of town, I drove west, up the road a couple of miles and bam!  A different world.  I wasn’t sure if the weather had just turned or I was just far enough out of town to make a difference.  No matter, the fog and mist were on me.  The ocean breeze was stiff.  It was suddenly cold.  I put my jacket on.  I took a few photos, but the mist was getting to my lens.  I called it a day.

It’s quiet here.  And if you haven’t guessed before now, I really like quiet.  Really, there’s so much to hear in the quiet.  The branches swaying, ever so slightly.  Redwoods can get so tall that even a slight breeze up high and they creek as they sway.  The ferns are tall and thick.  The paths just perfect with eons of decay turning into the softest form of dirt.  On this day I kept walking in and out of the fog.  A few hundred yards up the trail and the sun was shining again.  It’s quite cool in a redwood grove.  I think they like that.  I do too.  It keeps the atmosphere nice and quiet.
