It’s always exciting to be riding the big ferry and pull into the dock at Orcas Island in the heart of the San Juan Islands of Washington State.  I lived here for 4 years and my daughter was born here.  For me it has that deja vu feeling; a palpable sense of familiarity that is quietly comforting.  In and of itself, though, it is a magical place.  Mountain hikes, lakes to swim in, salt water beaches to explore and just the relaxed ambiance of Island life to bask in.  Pure magic.

Nothing like the south for an old west coast boy.  I love old and the south is so much older.  Walking along River St. with its old buildings and their new shops is an evenings entertainment.  But, in order to get some perspective I crossed the bridge and went over to Hutchinson Island where I could see the frontage landscape.  It’s a charming part of town.

It can be quite busy on Seattle’s waterfront.  Shipping and industry, ferry’s coming and going, people milling around and enjoying the scene, chowing down at one of many restaurants, the infamous Pike St. market close at hand.  I was actually able to get this photo while sitting in the ferris wheel car waiting to be let out.  It’s hard to get a clean shot from inside the car as there is often a reflection coming right back at you.  But this one came out clean.

Typical summer day in Seattle.  Stereotypically, at least.  Sunny the day before, sunny the day after.  But it was on this day I was wandering around downtown, taking in the sights and sounds of this beautiful place.  Perfectly cloudy NW Washington.  Although I grew up just 90 miles north of here, I had never been up the Columbia tower building.  The largest building in town has an observation deck, enclosed of course, and it costs a few dollars to get in, but it’s great for sweeping views of Seattle and the Puget Sound.

Being out and about before dawn is almost always exciting; in a quiet, meditative way.  The ease and subtleness of the increasing light.  The growing color wrapping itself within the particular environment.  It’s satisfying.  Now, I’m not often out before sunrise, mind you, but on this day in Savannah, Georgia, happily, I was.  There was hardly anyone around down on the river.  Just a ferry waiting for some passengers and the growing color of dawn.
