el capitan

A few days ago a couple of rock climbers ascended the most difficult route up the face of the famous El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.  This infamous granite face beauty is an incredible presence but not one I could ever imagine climbing.  They took 19 days to do it, actually sleeping on the face of the cliff, hundreds of feet off the ground.  A spectacular feat in a spectacular setting.

Happy June!  This was taken in June a couple of years ago during one of the biggest run-off years.  Certainly not this year, as it’s been relatively dry.  But in this year the water flow was incredible!  Yosemite National Park is such an incredible place to be in any circumstance and if you’ve never been there it’s a must go place.  John Muir and Ansel Adams knew what they were doing when they chose to spend so much time there.  Anyway, I was wandering around the park just taking in the beauty when I ended up here; the infamous place where Ansel Adams took his famous shot, Tunnel View.  The conditions are always changing and the days I was here were gorgeous!

I love Yosemite.  If you’ve never been, just go.  One mid winters day I got up well before sunrise and drove the 5 hours to the park for a quick overnight and a hike or two.  I’d never been up the Four Mile Trail so that was as good a reason as any to see how far up I could get until running into snow and having to turn back.  Actually, I got almost all the way up to Glacier point before the snow said to stop.  Slowly winding my way back down I stopped to take some time to simply gaze out at El Cap and the beautiful Yosemite Valley down below.  And then the sun came out from behind the cloud bank!  A remarkable place Yosemite is.

Yosemite is the most visited National Park of them all.  If you’ve ever been there it’s not hard to see why.  It’s so spectacular it’s hard to imagine and any photograph is hard pressed to convey its majesty.  If you haven’t been there, it’s one of those places to put on your list of places to go out of your way to get there.  This photo was taken from the roadside viewing area before heading into the Hwy 41 tunnel, probably not far from where Ansel Adams took his infamous “Clearing Winter Storm” shot.
