Hiking in the Sierra mountains is certainly a bucket list kind of experience.  I feel fortunate to live only a half days car ride away.  In the middle of a 5 day backpacking adventure we camped at Garnet Lake.  It’s not too difficult to get here and can be done as a day hike for those without the time to spend.  But to meander in the mountains, taking the time to explore and really appreciate this incredible environment, is what it’s all about.  Here, I arose before light, got bundled up, grabbed my equipment and went off down the slope to the lake.  What a treat to watch the dawning light waking up the mountain from its nighttime hiding.

I arose early, before the sunrise.  It was a short 2 minute walk through the bush to the edge of a very steep cliff drop and a panoramic view of the mountains and horizon beyond.  From there it was just wait and take in natures show.  A magical morning in the Leshiba Wilderness of South Africa.

It was black Friday, the infamous shopping day, and I was antsy.  I decided to get myself out of bed in the middle of the night and see if I could catch the city coming awake before dawn and all the shoppers could make their mark.  So, I headed for Treasure Island, the great little piece of land in the middle of the Bay bridge between Oakland and San Francisco.  It’s fairly close and presents perfectly unencumbered views of this great city.  It was cold and raw down on the rocks and water, the weather didn’t cooperate like I’d hoped, but it sure beat shuffling shoulder to shoulder with over amped shoppers.

Though I’m not a classical morning person, I really enjoy getting up before the sun rises when shooting photos is first on my agenda.  That first light of the morning is usually so amazing and pure.  It’s often quiet too which I like.  Here, I’m wandering around a Savannah, Georgia neighborhood and Forsythe Park watching the day come alive, admiring the dedicated joggers, watching the moss grow.  My kind of meditation.

It’s so amazing to be here in amongst the Joshua trees.  I fall into complete awe every time I’m there.  Of course, I’ve never been to the moon, but, I get a sense that this is how I’d feel if I ever did go.  It’s so quiet and unique.  As I did on this particular hike, being off the roads is especially inspiring; wandering in and around and through this incredible topography.

I brought my tent and pad and sleeping bag figuring I’d be spending the night outside.  After all, that’s what I do up in the Sierras, the mountains.  The great outdoors.  Well, I was so full from the day of both driving and exploring that I chose the easy way of a cheap motel in Bridgeport.  Call me soft, but I’m sure glad I did, too.  When I got up and left before dawn the next morning it was Cold!  I mean it was 15 degrees cold!  Stopping to photograph the emerging light was difficult on my frozen little fingers.  But, continue on I did.  I drove the 10 miles up to Twin Lakes to see the sights of fall.  Wow!

I love going to the desert in the winter.  Often I’ll go to one of the great desert parks, but this time I went to Palm Desert and Phoenix.  Unfortunately my camera bag was stolen out of my car the morning I was leaving for home and with it many of the images I had captured over the days.  But, alas, life goes on and I did come back with some I stll had in the camera.  I’m happy to say that my camera was not in the bag at the time of theft.

I happened to be in Phoenix for 2 days of mostly cloudy weather.  I actually like that as it often makes for a more dramatic experience.  Here, I went over to Papago Park as the day was dawning.  The city skyline is quite a ways away from there, but never-the-less it is there in the flat expanse of the urban desert.

I awoke from from my camp site well before dawn, grabbed what I thought I need for an all day outing in the death valley desert, and headed up to the infamous Zabriskie point to check out the light on Manley Beacon.  Even before dawn there were many people there, most with tripod and camera, just waiting for first light.  I found an open spot and waited as well.
