I was quite tired after flying into Oakland from Texas.  I wanted to get home and be done with the travel schedule.  But, here I was with having to make another quick decision.  A perfect storm was hovering over the City.  The clouds were breaking a bit and the sun was showering some light their way.  So, I quickly decided to get on the Bay bridge and over to Treasure Island where I’d have good unfettered access to the scene.  I was just hoping the clouds would stay parted and there would be enough sunlight shining through to make a difference in the image.  Storms are always so exciting.  It was certainly worth the trip.

Look.  Up in the sky.  If in the middle of a large cities downtown, you’ll probably have to look through any number of huge buildings.  Never having worked in one myself, I’ve always wondered what all those stories are for.  How much office work does one city need?  And these buildings are tall and many.  So many financial, legal and insurance people I guess.  Good for them, but I’ll stay street level in the cities and get up high in the mountains.

I know it’s odd, but the San Francisco Yacht Club is not even in San Francisco.  It’s actually across the bay in tiny Belvedere.  I was strolling by one evening as the sun was setting and although there was no light on the boats of the marina I noticed a perfect frame of color and light set against the still approaching darkness that was enveloping the harbor.  It’s the opposite of what I usually look for.  Maybe that’s what drew me in.

Thin clouds low on the horizon.  Sun getting ready to set for the day.  For me, a perfect time to head out to the ocean and take in the splendor of the days goodnight kiss.  I was lucky this day.  It doesn’t always happen with such affection, the color morphing to deep hues of its choosing.  A lovely time to be and take in the mystery.

Sometimes I feel it’s unfair I get to work at a place that offers the views I get to look at.  The sail boats, the sea birds and the sweeping skyscapes that sometimes occur, even in sunny California.  To have it all happen over the recognizable city of San Francisco… just frosting on the cake.

Fairhaven is the transportation hub of Bellingham.  Trains, busses and the Alaska ferry all converge here.  One morning while visiting my dad, I got up before dawn and went down to the terminal to see what I could see.  Not much going on down there in the sleepy hours of the morning but as it grew light the activity picked up.  The train arrived from Vancouver on its way south to unknown parts.  I wandered down in front of the big engine.  It was awfully impressive from that angle.

Heading into town on a full moon night.  What a shame.  But, the family was hungry and since I was too I chose to nix my plans to head out of town a ways to capture full moon images.  Well, the moon was going in and out from behind the clouds and from our parking lot was right next to the bank building, so, I grabbed the tripod and snapped a few times.  Saved me from waiting for our table and I still got to eat well.  Great tradeoff.

It’s a new year.  The road is clear but there’s a bend we can’t see beyond.  How do we navigate the road ahead that is already moving swiftly?  Where are we going?  Where do we want to wind up?  So many questions.  I can see some of the general landscape in the distance but the details are unknown and just a bit mysterious.  It’s up to me to drive my life forward.  Where am I going?  Where are you going?

It’s deep fall and the rains are coming, I hope.  At least here in sunny CA. I hope they’re coming.  But, there’s no reason why we need to sit around the house and wait.  As long as they’re coming they could actually be enjoyed.  I love getting away when the weather is expected to be a bit nasty.  Often there’s enough of a break in the patterns that give rise to incredible vistas and some of the best conditions for photography.  This squall is over Mono lake in the eastern Sierra of California.

It ain’t like this any more.  Walking down the road looking for a place to eat I spied this museum.  It’s a great depiction of times long past and how the natives of this beautiful area lived.  But, hold onto your hats.  Modernization has arrived.
