I was quite tired after flying into Oakland from Texas.  I wanted to get home and be done with the travel schedule.  But, here I was with having to make another quick decision.  A perfect storm was hovering over the City.  The clouds were breaking a bit and the sun was showering some light their way.  So, I quickly decided to get on the Bay bridge and over to Treasure Island where I’d have good unfettered access to the scene.  I was just hoping the clouds would stay parted and there would be enough sunlight shining through to make a difference in the image.  Storms are always so exciting.  It was certainly worth the trip.

Sometimes I feel it’s unfair I get to work at a place that offers the views I get to look at.  The sail boats, the sea birds and the sweeping skyscapes that sometimes occur, even in sunny California.  To have it all happen over the recognizable city of San Francisco… just frosting on the cake.

It’s always fun to take the drive up to the quaint little town of Mendocino on the northern California coast.  One day I took the drive alone and just lazily explored the area, having a grand time with the elements, ocean and camera.

Night is my favorite time to wander around a strange town and create artful images.  I don’t always take the time to do it, or I get too lazy if I’ve been out all day, but it usually gives me results I like.  On this dark night I had driven from Palm Springs to the Phoenix area and had walked around the area for many miles already.  But, I chose to keep plodding on.  I made it over to Tempe to see what I could see and after I got settled in for the night I chose to take off again.  This foot bridge over Tempe Town Lake caught my eye.

I’d never been down to St. Augustine so as long as I was in Savannah and so close, I went.  As always, it was fun exploring this part of the world.  Luckily for me it was a bit stormy while there.  The storm seemed to hang just west of the city but I saw this rain squall just as I was checking out the bridge of lions that spans the bay.

I love a good swamp.  Maybe because I didn’t grow up with them.  I just love the growth in them; creepy, slimy, often stagnant, algae invested still water.  And the trees, so often covered with Spanish moss, crawling and extending its life down, down, down, seemingly reaching out toward the water.  Magnolia Plantation here, is quite close to Charleston, South Carolina and a fun place to hike around and explore, if you like a good swamp.

I’d been up Mt. Tam before but never really made the effort or took the time to photograph her.  She’s really one the great power spots of the San Francisco Bay area.  Yes, there’s the golden gate bridge and coit tower and all the rest; the truly famous icons of San Francisco.  But, when discussing natural wonders of the entire area, Mt. Tamalpais, just north of the city in Marin County, is near the top of the list.

I love a good swamp.  And they’re hard to find here in California.  So, when in the south I tend to seek them out.  They’re kind of like redwood trees or the Pacific ocean here, or cactus in the desert.  Common and familiar if you live there, unique and inviting if you don’t.  So, when in New Orleans I spent a morning wandering around City Park, which, of course, is filled with many swampy bayou’s and trails to walk.  It’s a great place to soothe one’s soul in the  city.

I got to Tempe late and checked into the hotel.  Then quickly out again to have a bite to eat and enjoy the ambiance of a busy university town.  I could easily have gone back “home” to get a bit of sleep, but the night was still calling.  So, I headed down to the river to wander around a bit and see what was there; bridges and color and water and Tempe’s big mountain, Hayden Butte.  Perfect for a bit of night work.

Portland, Oregon is loaded with bridges.  I guess when a river runs through town there needs to be plenty of them.  I spent an evening wandering down one side of the Willamette River, crossing a bridge and continuing on the other side.  That way I could cross as many bridges as my feet would carry me while, at the same time, enjoying the sights and sounds of a beautiful city.
