autumn

One of the most enjoyable things about hunting for wild mushrooms is the sheer satisfaction of walking around, somewhat aimlessly, in the fall forest.  I’ve never been lost, but I’ve managed to wander so far off the trail that I’m not sure where I’ll wind up.  Chanterelle hunting is my favorite, but you never know what waits down below in the moist rich humus of the Earth in the fall.

Being late in the season, the cabin was empty.  All the rustic mountain cabins were empty, ready for the maintenance they’d need before next year.  The emptiness of the cabins and quiet of the high Sierra made for great exploration.  There was a sense of mystery and charm, especially as the turning colors of fall made their way into the frame.  I sure love the mountains.

I love hiking where there is no trail, just traipsing through the forest.  During the fall, after the rains start, it’s even more of a thrill to follow my nose and legs in search of the forest mushroom.  It’s not as easy now living in a drier climate, and I certainly don’t get out as much.  Still, I always find the hunt exciting.  Maybe it’s some genetic thing left over from the days of needing to hunt for food.  When not wondering, I can always just go to the forest and look.

It’s fall again!  I love this time of year.  Much of the time it’s very soft, especially compared to the height of summer and its intensity.  The light is softer, the darkness of day slowly fading, the colors in nature turning inward, readying itself for winters slumber.  It’s also a great time to be in the mountains, where scenes like this abound.

I brought my tent and pad and sleeping bag figuring I’d be spending the night outside.  After all, that’s what I do up in the Sierras, the mountains.  The great outdoors.  Well, I was so full from the day of both driving and exploring that I chose the easy way of a cheap motel in Bridgeport.  Call me soft, but I’m sure glad I did, too.  When I got up and left before dawn the next morning it was Cold!  I mean it was 15 degrees cold!  Stopping to photograph the emerging light was difficult on my frozen little fingers.  But, continue on I did.  I drove the 10 miles up to Twin Lakes to see the sights of fall.  Wow!

Of all the times I’ve been up to the Sierra Nevada mountains, I’d never been there just to see the fall colors.  I guess it seemed too touristy without taking the time and energy to do some serious hiking.  Well, this time there was very little hiking and a lot of “leaf peeping” as I’ve heard it called.  Photography was the major interest and activity.  And all I can say is, Wow!  What an incredible place to go and be!  Vivid color with brilliant contrasting blue skies.  I was as giddy as a kid in an candy store.

Fall is such an incredible time of color and change.  The natural world is on its way to death; only to begin anew again next spring, I might add.  But now, it’s autumn.  I’m enjoying the warm days and cool nights here in my part of California.  And my little part includes the too-numerous-to-mention wine vineyards, in whatever season always an incredible subject for a photographic image or two.  This one comes from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County.

You can’t see it from this vantage point, but the glory of Mt. Baker in NW Washington is just around the corner.  And Mt. Shuksan is just behind and even closer.  But it’s fall now and the colors of fall become primary.  I love color.  I do virtually no black & white photography and never really have.  So, it’s fall and the colors are out!
