Portland, Oregon

There’s something about watching young kids playing and having fun.  Maybe it reminds me of times gone by and my own youth.  Or spending those countless hours watching my own kids make their own play.  Or times spent now watching my grandkids play.  Maybe it’s the ever constant flow of time and life that touches my awareness and helps me to realize and appreciate with gratitude the beauty of life.  What a ride we have here.  It reminds me to play more and enjoy the time we do have on Earth.

Walking around Portland is easy.  No hills to speak of and a wonderful trail that travels all along Waterfront Park above the Willamette River, which travels through the city on its way to the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean.  You can walk along one side of the river, cross one of the many Portland bridges, walk along the other side, only to cross another bridge to get back to your starting point.  It also provides a good starting point to further explore some of the gem locales of the beautiful city.

Portland, Oregon is loaded with bridges.  I guess when a river runs through town there needs to be plenty of them.  I spent an evening wandering down one side of the Willamette River, crossing a bridge and continuing on the other side.  That way I could cross as many bridges as my feet would carry me while, at the same time, enjoying the sights and sounds of a beautiful city.

Kids do the darndest things.  I know plenty of moms who wouldn’t dare let their kids climb on a fence barrier to get a better view of the goings on way down below on the river.  I’m not sure where this kids mom was.  Probably home while he was with dad.  Dads often let kids explore a bit more, take more risks.  I guess moms prefer safety where dads like adventure.  He was up there for a while, too.  I finally turned away to focus on other things.  I was on my own adventure and wanted to see more myself.  Portland’s a great place for walking a viewing the river.  This kid had a nice spot.

Portland, Oregon is surely a city of bridges.  I spent an evening and morning criss-crossing most of them in the downtown area, the Willamette river flowing lazily northward, underneath.  And the river esplanade is a convenient and scenic path for a walk or bike ride or morning run in the cool of the pacific northwest overcast; waiting, hoping, for the sun to show itself.
