Mono Lake

Nov 302015

It’s deep fall and the rains are coming, I hope.  At least here in sunny CA. I hope they’re coming.  But, there’s no reason why we need to sit around the house and wait.  As long as they’re coming they could actually be enjoyed.  I love getting away when the weather is expected to be a bit nasty.  Often there’s enough of a break in the patterns that give rise to incredible vistas and some of the best conditions for photography.  This squall is over Mono lake in the eastern Sierra of California.

The tufa formations of Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra of California are quite amazing.  While most of them are in the lakes water, these were resting outside on the lakes shoreline.  I wonder how many years they take to form.  Did the lake have to recede for them to show themselves like this?  I suppose I could look it all up on line these days but there’s something about the mystery of it all that makes them special to me.

Last summer I was heading up into the eastern Sierras.  I love it there.  Anywhere along highway 395 is spectacular.  Before putting on my pack and hiking up into some elevation I took an afternoon and evening and camped out along the road near Mono Lake.  I’d driven by there many time before but never really explored the area.  Here was my chance.  Before sunset I went over to the south shore of the lake where the larger limestone rock formations, called tufa’s, are and joined many other sunset gazers and photographers to watch the show.  Good fortune placed some nice cloud cover to the east as the sun was setting in the west.  The more the sun set, the richer the cloud color.
