Los Angeles

Walking in the Hollywood hills late one night, I was biding my time, waiting for a peek down into the city with an unencumbered view.  This one isn’t quite as sweeping as I’d envisioned but I rather like the rolling frame.  You never know what you’ll get if you simply keep walking.

Come back soon, if you dare.  The ominence of art.  Hovering above the gateway into and out of Chinatown bordering downtown Los Angeles, the dragons beg of intrigue.  I’m certainly struck by them.  Is there some kind of spell that’s lifted when leaving?  Will I remember my night there?  Will I be drawn to come back, again and again, spending hard earned money within its bounds?  An enticing lure or warning symbol?  Maybe the presence of city hall will save me.  Maybe I’ll ask Jet Li for a safe escort out.

I wonder where he’s going.  This is a classis example of setting out to capture one thing and coming back with so much more.  I was driving around Los Angeles one night, looking for a good angle on the downtown area.  I parked the car and got out to walk around when I ran across this train platform.  I just stopped and waited for the right moment.  The downtown cityscape could wait too.

It was warm out and I wanted to come down out of the hills and see what the Hollywood Forever Cemetery had to offer.  I don’t know anyone there but it did not disappoint.  We wandered around for a short while, being on a timer with relatives.  At the end, I looked up and voila; the Hollywood sign.

Yes.  There are plenty of big buildings in Los Angeles.  But I was quite surprised to find how easy it was to get around downtown.  Getting around to different parts of the city when needing to use the freeway is quite different, but within downtown is actually not so bad.   Personally, I had a wonderful time walking around, driving when need be  and just generally enjoying this big city.  I wonder what it is about big buildings that attract me?  I seem to just like the architecture of the area I’m in, in general, wherever or whatever that happens to be.

Thirst quenching.  Fresh.  Fun.  It’s all part of wandering around the colorful Hollywood farmers market street fair.  Yes, there are real live everyday events happening in Hollywood.  Not all glitz and glamour.  Fresh and organic.  Thirst quenching.  It’s just all part of everything in Hollywood.

I took off on a trail up into the Hollywood Hills wanting to get up closer to the infamous Hollywood sign.  But, as is often the case, other images and angles pop into view as this one of the Griffith Park observatory did.  The topography opened just right to get this shot of the observatory a few miles away in the fading light of a glowing sky.

I drove up to the end of the road and parked.  I was intending to make it up to the infamous Hollywood Sign, at least most of the way, but it was getting dark and I kept getting distracted by the incredible views of Los Angeles and all the different colors and angles with every step I took.  And then I saw it!  As it was making its way out of the frame, I saw it.  Clearly something alien, and just cruising right over the heart of one of the largest cities in the world!  Do you see it?  There, on the right side of the frame.  Do you believe it?

Peace on Earth??  How about peace in the city?  Or peace in your family?  What about peace with yourself?  My take is that peace is a given.  It’s always here and present.  It’s we humans that don’t recognize it; that somehow always seem to muck it up; to misinterpret intentions.  Take all the humans out of LA, or out of anywhere, and there’s plenty of peace.  We don’t make peace.  We can only realize the peace that’s already here by working through the layers that prevent its recognition.    OK, OK.  Enough of the editorializing.  I guess I have more work to do.

No, it’s not the 3:10 to Yuma, but it could be the 5:10 to Pasadena.  And what do people do these days while waiting?… check out whatever’s on their phone.  In fact, for the most part, it seems that no one waits at all, anymore.  A world with no down time.  Always gotta be updating or texting or tweeting or talking or anything to just keep pushing onward.  How much do you let yourself do nothing; just be wherever it is you are?  No phone, no talking, just taking it all in on this beautiful Earth; just waiting for the train.
