Flowers

It’s spring again!  That yearly marking point and promise of warmer days to come.  At least here in what we call the northern parts of Earth.  Various trees are beginning to flower here in California.  The rain now giving way to blue skies and the suns warmth.  I’m eating plenty of winter’s harvest of oranges now and will patiently wait for the magic of the fruit trees blossoms turning into their juicy offspring of fully developed fruits.

Summertime and the living is colorful.  With flowers.  I go in spurts of buying splashes of color for the yard and garden.  Usually I get the small flats but sometimes I’ll buy seeds and plant in the fall or spring for the promise of color in summer.  Either way, it sure brings a smile out in me.

Traveling along lonely country roads is an enchanting pastime and one I thoroughly enjoy.  After some days of hiking and camping high in the Sierra, I took a few hours to slowly decompress, to get used to sitting and lighten the blow of acclimating to full blown civilization.  Not sure where this field is.  Somewhere off highway 395 along the eastern side of the central Sierras.  It’s such incredible country.  I know there are many places in the world filled with beauty and wonder.  This area is one of my favorites.

It’s not from this year, but it certainly gives the impression of winter.  It seems like I should be sad for the rose, but I’m not.  It didn’t quite have enough time to fully blossom when the force of winter took over, and that’s OK.  I like winter too.  It lends a certain air of beauty to the scene, don’t you think.

I just happen to love roses.  A few years ago I got a bit crazy with them and planted over 50 around our property.  It’s only half an acre so they kind of take over this time of year.  I haven’t been pruning them too much either so they’re starting to get pretty large within their own range of growth.  It’s pretty amazing to be walking around the yard, not paying too much attention to them when, Wham!  This incredible and intense fragrance wafts up and around.  I just stop and relish in the moment.

Out of the mud grows this beautiful blossom.  The lotus flower is steeped in traditional Buddhist lore and its beauty and elegance certainly can’t be denied.  This particular blossom was found on the grounds of the Ananda meditation and retreat center near Grass Valley, California in the foothills of the Sierra mountains.

Over the years I have planted quite a few roses in our yard.  Some would say too many.  But I love the fragrance and elegance and color and just shear beauty that they offer each year.  Their first flush of bloom in the spring is truly a sight to behold.  And their fragrance…. if only you could smell what you see on your screen.  This particular one is called cymbeline and has one of the most unusual and sweet fragrances to be found.  In fact, if you’re looking for a place to purchase roses with some flair beyond what you can find at your local big box store I highly recommend www.vintagegardens.com for an inventory of 100’s of old and antique roses.

I love photographing flowers.  I really like growing them myself.  I don’t grow water lilies, though, and I don’t stumble across them too often.  So, when I do I take full advantage.  These were growing in a place I would never have expected; the cool, wet pacific northwest at Rosario resort on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands.
