The Colorado state senate that is.  Located in the state capitol building in Denver, this is quite a building.  Relatively small in size it’s easy to navigate and explore.  Not many people around.   Must have been during a political break.  Sometimes it seems like most politicians are on a continuous political break.  Good thing the building’s still there to marvel at.

Denver.  The mile high city.  Right smack dab in the middle of downtown is the 16th st. mall, about 30 years old.   It’s closed to motor traffic except for the constantly running shuttle busses taking you from one end to the other.  I spent a day wandering around greater Denver and found myself here or just a block away quite often.

Across the street from the State Capitol building is the Denver City and County Building; the place where all the local government processes are conducted.  It’s a beautiful building in a great part of town.  I guess I just like big iconic architecture, wherever I find myself.  I can’t remember why the flags are half-mast.  I even looked up historical events of that month.  I guess there’s always some kind of tragedy or reason to fly at half-mast.  I wish we could just let them fly and realize we live in a volatile world.

Colorado is not just for hiking or skiing, you know.  Modern Denver shows itself over and over again if you choose to see it.  Yes, I went up into the mountains when there, but I also spent some time enjoying the city part.  Denver’s modern art museum in the golden triangle is a beautiful architectural sampling.

I’m sure this isn’t a very significant place or scene to depict Colorado Rockies baseball, but without actually going to a game I rather like this archway.  No Rockies in town this evening, but the arch still beckons, holding a space for when the crowds return.

Urban wandering and the architecture that makes every city unique has become one of my favorite pastimes.  I used to avoid the girth of the city for the fresh wide open spaces of the natural world, especially when it came to photography.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love and even prefer the mountains or ocean if given the choice, but I’ve discovered that hiking in an urban setting can reap its own rewards.  Instead of trees or rocks, there are buildings, unique in many ways.  Denver’s art museum takes unique to the more extreme edge.  It’s a fascinating study that proudly takes its place on the edge of downtown at civic center park.

It’s not easy going back in time/memory and remembering how I got to a particular place.  Often, I’ll sit here at the computer and zone out, or is it zone in, and try and relive the space I was in or what I was thinking or feeling when I chose to press the little shutter button.  Putting myself back into the image here, I know I was tired.  It was the end of a long day of walking and exploring in inner city of Denver.  I was pretty much on a mission, heading back to the hotel.  And yet, still, I turned and chose to set up again for this shot up the stairs to Denver’s millennium bridge.  The angles of the architecture are what drew me.  Do you see anything here, or is this just an expression of the exhaustion of a wandering soul looking for his bed?

I was in a quandary while wandering around the east side of Denver as the sun was starting to set.  There were no clouds around for the sun to bounce off of, but I knew the sky color would do something.  On the ground, the buildings were blocking any kind of view to the sky.  I really wanted to get on higher ground, but not knowing where to go I was stuck.  But, there it was.  A parking garage.  If there was roof access I could get higher and maybe find an opening.  Sure enough; I got in and rode to the top.  Now, I seek out parking garages.  You never know when you’ll need one.

Whenever I’m in a city that’s also the capital of that state, I always make sure to visit the capital building.  They are, most often, grand examples of art in design.  Historical, yes, but more importantly a grand work of art.  And if anything is lacking in the architecture, it’s always made up for in the addition of other art, or painting or…  This is a mural in Colorado’s capital in Denver; a beautiful building altogether.

I was walking around Denver’s Capital Hill area as the sun was on its way down.  It’s a beautiful area with a mix of color and gardens and sprawling lawn with artistic statues and the large architecturally significant government buildings.  Government buildings always seem large and significant.  I’m often drawn to those areas when in a city that houses government.  Not that I get into politics that much, but I sure do appreciate the thought and care and artistic beauty that usually goes into these areas.  Denver’s is no exception.
