Bodie Ghost Town

Sep 302014

Speaking of high in the mountains, Bodie, or what remains of it, is quite high.  Over 8000 feet high.  I love old things, and old buildings are right at the top of the list.  I can imagine people bustling into these buildings to gather supplies for the cold winter; or coming in after the snows melt to get the spring planting needs that would provide much food for the next winter.  But what about the truck?  Guess that came in a few years later.

At over 8000 feet in the Sierra’s you’ll need a lot of wood to keep these places warm.  Actually, the ghost town of Bodie, California is quite interesting to explore.  It started as a mining town in the mid 1800’s and is now a registered landmark and California State Historic Park.  In some ways a bit lame, but at least they do help to preserve the structures.  It certainly presents some interesting photo ops.

I wonder if these old time pumps would have fared well in today’s self-serve world.  I think they were much more complicated back when they were actually in use.  At least that’s what I remember as a kid, driving into the Shell station across from my dads work.  We’d drive over the trip bell which would clang in the shop where Rolf  would be working on an oil change or repair.  He’d come out and greet us with a smile, put in a key and turn the crank, place the hose in the tank and then proceed to check the oil and wash the windows.  Now that was service!  This gas station from the past is in the ghost town of Bodie, California.  Wouldn’t you just love to drive that shiny blue pickup?!
