So nice in any situation, Austin’s Zilker park is a great place to roam around in.  When you’re with your sweetie and the suns winding its way down and the city gets hugged by the suns late rays… well, life is good.

Heading into town on a full moon night.  What a shame.  But, the family was hungry and since I was too I chose to nix my plans to head out of town a ways to capture full moon images.  Well, the moon was going in and out from behind the clouds and from our parking lot was right next to the bank building, so, I grabbed the tripod and snapped a few times.  Saved me from waiting for our table and I still got to eat well.  Great tradeoff.

I wonder what goes on down there.  It couldn’t be too secret as you can see the area from up above.  But, anything going on below ground level having to do with government has got to be suspect.  Doesn’t it?  Maybe I just have an overactive imagination or have seen too many secret agent movies.  Or maybe I’m innately suspicious of the workings of government.  Whatever the case, I do know I enjoy walking around the city at night.

Cruising to get in place for the big show.  That’s what they’re all doing.  Getting in place to watch the nightly flight of the bats in Austin, Texas.  Having seen it I know it’s something worth making an event out of.  Or taking someone from out of town to see.  Just get there early if you want a good viewing spot.  That’s what’s smart about having a boat or kayak.  You get a perfectly unencumbered view of the spectacle.

Walking through the U of Texas campus one evening I spied what I thought was an unusual view of the capital building.  And it also included the top of Austin’s other architectural icon, the Frost Bank building.  I love just walking where my feet take me with camera by my side.

I arose early to catch the early morning light.  Meandering down by the river, or lake, I fought my way down to an open spot right next to the water, set up the tripod and fired away.  Generally I don’t like getting up so early, but I sure do like the soft morning light.  And being February, the light was especially soft.

I had a plane ticket for Austin today.  Had to cancel.  I’ve been dealing with Lyme disease for 4 months now and just don’t have the strength to go.  Austin is such a vibrant city.  I’ll miss it.  So I get to stay home and post more to the blog.  Haven’t taken many photos lately.  But, hopefully, will be uploading some I took over the winter soon.  This image of the capitol I took while wandering around the UT campus one evening.

Even out here in the Western US I’ve been going through the winter health doldrums.  Looking at some kids enjoying themselves in the coolness of Austin’s Barton creek looks refreshing.  So, I’ll look at this and remember the freshness, freedom and playfulness of summer.  Here’s to our health!

Driving into Austin the night before was so colorful I vowed to head downtown and capture the color of sunset with the downtown skyline as the backdrop.  Not having been here in over 2 years, I wasn’t quite sure of the angle but picked a spot I thought would as least be OK.  Construction fences were there to greet me.  I quickly drove down the road and dove into the next parking lot along the river.  Too thick with too much poison oak.  Strike 2.  Walking along the trail a bit, I noticed quite a crowd of people gathered on and under what I recognized as the Congress St. bridge.  Aha!  Sunset was fast approaching and all were waiting for the bridge bats to awaken.  They put on their nightly show on a beautiful, warm evening.

My granddaughter was just 2 days old and I was up early in the crisp morning air.  I meandered down to the south side of river to catch the morning light glow on the city.  Peaceful time of day and a satisfied, content feeling inside.  Welcome to the world, Madison of Austin.  I’ll see you later this month!
