It was quite cold on this morning.  But, towards the end of October at over 7000 feet and just past dawn, I couldn’t expect anything different.  What an exciting time to be awake and out in nature.  I saw one other person at the lake and, of course, he too was out capturing images of the rising sun on the mountain peaks above the amazingly calm waters of the lake.  It’s a great time to be in the mountains.

It ain’t like this any more.  Walking down the road looking for a place to eat I spied this museum.  It’s a great depiction of times long past and how the natives of this beautiful area lived.  But, hold onto your hats.  Modernization has arrived.

Cable cars, one of the icons of the iconic city of San Francisco.  Maybe you know of another city with this type of transportation.  I don’t.  Cable cars are just one of the signature sights to see in this great city.  You don’t even have to go out of your way to notice them when you’re tooling around the downtown area and city at large.  Need to get from downtown to the wharfs?  Take the cable car.  It’s fun.  It’s slow.  You see the city.  And here, from the top of Russian Hill, you can even see Alcatraz.

Being late in the season, the cabin was empty.  All the rustic mountain cabins were empty, ready for the maintenance they’d need before next year.  The emptiness of the cabins and quiet of the high Sierra made for great exploration.  There was a sense of mystery and charm, especially as the turning colors of fall made their way into the frame.  I sure love the mountains.

Alone on the boat.  I can only imagine the freedom and power coming from being alone on the boat, just me and the elements.  Though the sailor here is quite close to the civilized shore, still he gets to work with the wind and water and the numerous feelings that come with mastering the craft.  In San Francisco Bay it’s easy to find many boats in close proximity.  Here, he’s not only alone on the boat, he’s alone on his slice of the bay.

Nestled between the villages of Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo on the southern Caribbean side of Costa Rica is where you’ll find the gorgeous property of Casa Viva and the local beach area Punta Uva.  I love the Caribbean side.  It’s by far the less traveled of the two sides and as the wave action isn’t as pronounced as the western side, it presents a more relaxed entry into the refreshingly warm ocean waters.  Our cabin was set only a few hundred feet from the mostly vacant beach.  The jungle was near, the monkeys and sloths roamed the trees of the property.  The fruit, the fruit, the fruit.  Bike riding to the two villages.  A perfect place to call home for a time.
