Traveling along lonely country roads is an enchanting pastime and one I thoroughly enjoy.  After some days of hiking and camping high in the Sierra, I took a few hours to slowly decompress, to get used to sitting and lighten the blow of acclimating to full blown civilization.  Not sure where this field is.  Somewhere off highway 395 along the eastern side of the central Sierras.  It’s such incredible country.  I know there are many places in the world filled with beauty and wonder.  This area is one of my favorites.

It’s summer.  The kids are out of school.  Time for sailing lessons.  Every year at this time these little sail boats cluster in the bay across from San Francisco with their eager learners and go through the gyrations of learning how to navigate a boat with the wind.  They’re fun to watch.  Sometimes funny.  What’s nice is that they’re out in the sunshine and elements, moving their bodies, creating a connection the natural world, learning the idiosyncrasies of the wind and how move with it rather than fight it.  Aikido on the water.  Ballet with a boat.  I watch from my office.

So, how could I get a photo of a wild hippo this close with it’s mouth open?  It’s Jessica the hippo and she is somewhat of a celebrity.  Washed up along a river bank as a new born in South Africa after an epic flood, she was taken in by a couple who’s land she washed up on.  They decided to feed her and nurse her to health.  Now, although living wild among other hippos on the river, she continues to live close by her adopted home and wanders up the path many times daily to feed on her preferred treat of cut up sweet potatoes.  We petted her, fed her, and just ogled at her beauty and kind nature.  Maybe it’s Jessica who’s adopted us humans for her own pets.

Rafting down the Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon is a monumental experience.  The water’s ice cold and often quite frisky.  The rock most often a rusty shade of red.  But, what’s most impressive is the size of the walls and how small I felt inside this immense cavern.  The timeless quiet, the constant flow of water, the movement of the raft.  Nothing compares to the feeling of being so small inside something so big.
