The inscription reads Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.  Just as true today as it was in 1963 when Martin Luther King uttered those words in his infamous I have a dream speech.  Maybe we’ve gone forward toward King’s vision in some ways yet it seems we have a ways to go as a human culture to achieve any sort of sane semblance of the real meaning behind those words.  After 50 years, at least we’ve constructed a monument to the man and his dream.  Here’s to embracing his dream as our dream.

Instead of heading straight home from work, I decided to take a 10 minute side trip to the north side of the bridge.  I enjoy being around and shooting different angles of the golden gate and seeing what kind of weather pattern presents itself.  I parked my car and wandered around looking for angles when I spied a path I’d overlooked on previous visits.  Perfect.  I didn’t even have to go too far to find something I hadn’t seen before.

Church or castle?  That is the question.  Whatever it is or used to be, it marks the continued connection with an age long past in the green and mostly rural conditions of present day Ireland.  Yes, there’s Dublin and many other wonderful cities, but it’s the farmland and greenery and sheep dotting much of this magnificent Isle that strikes me the most.  This long history of the rural landscape with its people is what gives Ireland its charm and the people its friendly, gentle presence.

I don’t often think of spying a great blue heron in the middle of a city, but when the city is covered with crisscrossing canals as Amsterdam is then it’s more understandable.  This big boy was perched in a full but small green leafed tree near one of those beautiful canals.  Maybe he had just had his meal and was digesting.  Whatever his story, it was quite a sight.  I’ve seen my share of herons, but never before sitting in a tree.
