I was thinking about a friend on the east coast.  It’s winter in all its glory there.  Cold, brash, harsh, filled with snow.  Not here in sunny CA.  I have to remind myself with images like this that winter, in the way that I think about winter, actually exists.  This was taken up in the Sierras one January day when snow was coming down hard.  It was so quiet.  I like the quiet, and hiking around in the storm gave me some sense of peace.  I like that too.

Believe it or not this was taken in the Arizona desert at White Tanks Park just west of Phoenix.  I love cloudy days in the desert.  Much cooler even when it’s winter.  I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time here, but the desert environment is invigorating no matter what the circumstance.

What a remarkable place.  Where the outside is somewhat ordinary, the inside makes up for it in spades.  Artistic, detailed, glorious.  We just happened to be turned on to the place by a local as a not-to-be-missed visual spectacle.  Especially in a place as unlikely as Savannah, Georgia.  So, off we went to see what we could see.  As fate would allow, we arrived just a few minutes before the church was to be used as an event locale, but we were told to come on in for a few minutes before they got started.  Fine with me.  I set up the tripod and had fun composing.

A few days ago a couple of rock climbers ascended the most difficult route up the face of the famous El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.  This infamous granite face beauty is an incredible presence but not one I could ever imagine climbing.  They took 19 days to do it, actually sleeping on the face of the cliff, hundreds of feet off the ground.  A spectacular feat in a spectacular setting.

Walking through the U of Texas campus one evening I spied what I thought was an unusual view of the capital building.  And it also included the top of Austin’s other architectural icon, the Frost Bank building.  I love just walking where my feet take me with camera by my side.

Being a fairly flat city, Charleston is easy to get around in.  But, there are plenty of alternative modes of transportation available for hire.  Horse drawn buggies are popular, but these modern rickshaws take the prize for ease and speed.  For romance, take the horses.  For practical transportation, take the rickshaw.

A lot of photography for me is simply being out and about.  I can head out on a mission to shoot a certain area or event and then find something completely unexpected and unplanned that pops up.  Or, if I keep open enough, I’ll head down a side road, just to see what’s there.  This cabin popped out at me one day while shooting something completely different.  I traveled down one of those side roads and voila.  I love the openness and exploration that photography affords me.

I’d been photographing a wedding in a recreational area in the Colorado Rockies.  During the day the clouds intensified, rolling through, threatening and then  backing off.  After the ceremony finished and the revelry was winding down I was able to walk around and capture part of nature’s show going on.  The weather patterns are awesome high up in the mountains.  My favorite set of convergences, mountains and dramatic weather.
