Speaking of high in the mountains, Bodie, or what remains of it, is quite high.  Over 8000 feet high.  I love old things, and old buildings are right at the top of the list.  I can imagine people bustling into these buildings to gather supplies for the cold winter; or coming in after the snows melt to get the spring planting needs that would provide much food for the next winter.  But what about the truck?  Guess that came in a few years later.

It’s fall again!  I love this time of year.  Much of the time it’s very soft, especially compared to the height of summer and its intensity.  The light is softer, the darkness of day slowly fading, the colors in nature turning inward, readying itself for winters slumber.  It’s also a great time to be in the mountains, where scenes like this abound.

San Francisco is known for its fog and this morning was no different.  I had been out shooting some night shots and wasn’t ready to head home so I just kept driving around, looking for more; more scenes, more views, more angles.  Sometimes I just can’t stop myself and this was one of those days.  As the daylight increased, so did the fog and I was getting frustrated.  After all, I was making an effort to be out, why couldn’t I see?  Patience, just a little patience.  And then, the fog started lifting.

Hard to beat hiking at 10,000 feet, high in the Sierra Nevada mountains.  You never know what mother nature will provide for conditions to behold.  I miss going up this year, but for health reasons I’m taking a year off.  I’m sure I’ll be up again next season.  Here, we were heading back down the trail when I was floored by what lay ahead.  The whole scene, bathed in the softest of light, was nectar for the soul.

One of the signature buildings in Savannah is the old Cotton Exchange building.  I wasn’t seeking it out on purpose but when wandering around the town’s historic district it’s hard to miss.  I can imagine the cotton pirates down at the dock, smuggling bolts of cotton for the black market.  Does cotton come in bolts?  No matter.  I still love my cotton shirts.

I was driving up the winding coast highway, seeing what I could see and just enjoying the drive and vistas.  As I’m often wont to do, I pulled over to admire the view.  Though I live less than an hour away, I’m always blown away at the beauty and power of the ocean and this area in particular.

Night is my favorite time to wander around a strange town and create artful images.  I don’t always take the time to do it, or I get too lazy if I’ve been out all day, but it usually gives me results I like.  On this dark night I had driven from Palm Springs to the Phoenix area and had walked around the area for many miles already.  But, I chose to keep plodding on.  I made it over to Tempe to see what I could see and after I got settled in for the night I chose to take off again.  This foot bridge over Tempe Town Lake caught my eye.

Do you recognize this building?  I don’t.  I should have written it down.  I often think I’ll just remember, but as time marches on invariably I don’t.  I’m pretty sure it’s one of the governmental buildings.  I know it’s in Washington DC.  Being from the west, I just always like a good building with older style architecture.  The west is more modern, newer.  Everything costs so much more now.  Or is it just that owners and builders have gotten away from an artistic value system.  A sentiment I’ve always liked is ‘One of the things about progress is that we have to stop calling it progress’.  Onward with artistic architecture.
