When I arrived at the Okefenokee swamp it had grown overcast and was approaching dark.  There was hardly anyone around and it was quite muggy.  Just a couple hours to explore its mystery.  And mysterious it was.  Maybe it was the ominous weather, but it truly was a bit spooky.  Perfect.  I managed to get around and walk through the brush and along the trails when I ran into this old homestead.  Nobody around.  It could have been 100 years ago.  Maybe they were off looking for alligator meat.

I’ve been here a number of times and enjoy it each time I go.  Down by the wharf, it’s an easy place to get to, if you can find the parking.  If you like having a drink, it’s the place known for inventing the Irish Coffee.  A little coffee, some sugar and of course the Irish whiskey.  Nice in the often cool San Francisco climate.  But really, almost any place in San Francisco is worth checking out, at least once.

Ah, County Kerry and Ireland.  Nothing like Ireland.  The people, the land, the golf, the music, the beer.  One of my favorite places of all time.  If there weren’t so many other places to go I’d be going to Ireland much more often.  I went with some very good friends and we crisscrossed the countryside without a care, enjoying the music, food, people and golf.  We arose by 4:00 AM to take the drive down and around the ring of Kerry through the county.  Of course we stopped half way to play an incredible golf course, Waterville.  Just all in a days adventure.

Yes, it’s foggy and quite cool in South Africa.  Not quite my imagination of what Africa is, but now that I’ve seen it, I see it as a lucky break.  What an incredible setting.  We drove up a very rustic road to around 4000 feet to get to the Leshiba Wilderness, set in a valley in the middle of a ominous mountain range.  The place is home to many wild animals and you don’t have to drive on safari to be in and amongst them.  On this cool and blustery afternoon we simply walked down the road and ran into whatever was there.  Coming around a bend in the road, the view opened up to this field of African bush and there they were.  Of course, as soon as they spotted us, they took off running.  They sure are beautiful in the wild.

Walking around Portland is easy.  No hills to speak of and a wonderful trail that travels all along Waterfront Park above the Willamette River, which travels through the city on its way to the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean.  You can walk along one side of the river, cross one of the many Portland bridges, walk along the other side, only to cross another bridge to get back to your starting point.  It also provides a good starting point to further explore some of the gem locales of the beautiful city.

I wonder how long ago this place was actually lived in.  Now, it’s old and a bit beat up.  Still, I rather like it.  It is a bit spooky running into it high in the mountains but it is a part of a larger complex of cabins at Lundy lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains.  I went there looking for color and the turning of the leaves and I found this.  I wonder when it was when the last person actually stayed here?  Think I’ll knock and see if anyone’s home.

This was taken during the first part of my adventure to Death Valley and then on to Las Vegas.  As I mentioned in my last post it was quite a diverse meandering.  Here, I arose early from my camp spot and went up to Zabriskie Point to catch the sunrise.  Beautiful as you might expect.  Also, the areal was filled with at least 30 other gazers, mostly being photographers.  As the sun started to rise I wandered down the trail and into golden canyon.  Quiet surrounded me.  The light was shining on the alluvial hills and I could see the bottom of the canyon.  And since it was the middle of winter, the temperature was perfect.  A little slice of heaven.

This is where I stayed; the Flamingo Hotel on the Strip.  A cheap and convenient place right in the middle of the art museum action known as the Las Vegas Strip.  I drove over from Death Valley, the complete opposite of everything that Vegas is about.  But, truth be known, I really like Las Vegas.  It’s so visual.  There’s always something that captures the eye.  It made for a very diverse and thoroughly enjoyable week of wandering around the west.

I arose early to catch the early morning light.  Meandering down by the river, or lake, I fought my way down to an open spot right next to the water, set up the tripod and fired away.  Generally I don’t like getting up so early, but I sure do like the soft morning light.  And being February, the light was especially soft.

There’s nothing like golf at the Bandon Dunes golf complex on the southern Oregon coast.  It now consists of 4 championship courses and one par 3 course with an amazing practice facility.  But the real treat is going there with a bunch of friends, taking it all in, enjoying the golf and camaraderie.  I snuck away one evening as the sun was going down and I had too much to drink and wandered around the course with my camera and tripod.  No body else around.  Just me and the golf course, wind and ocean.
