I noticed this hawk sitting on our recycling bin at the end of the driveway.  We looked at it for a while then went back in the house.  A week later it was back.  This time it was sitting on our gatepost.  We realized it must be tame or sick since it didn’t seem afraid.  A week later a neighbor said she called the humane society or some such organization and they came out and said it was sick, captured it, and took it to their clinic.  Hopefully they nursed it back to health.  Haven’t seen it since.  He/she is a beautiful bird.

The Red Oak Victory is a World War Two naval supply ship.  It was built where it’s now docked in Richmond, California and I wandered in and through it last fall.  I’m not old enough to have participated in the war but it sure did take me back.  Hard to really imagine people actually doing all that; going to sea loaded with supplies for those actually doing battle in the Pacific, knowing you were a floating target.  At least we know they made it back.  Now it’s part of the “Rosie the Riveter” national monument in the Richmond shipyards.

I had a plane ticket for Austin today.  Had to cancel.  I’ve been dealing with Lyme disease for 4 months now and just don’t have the strength to go.  Austin is such a vibrant city.  I’ll miss it.  So I get to stay home and post more to the blog.  Haven’t taken many photos lately.  But, hopefully, will be uploading some I took over the winter soon.  This image of the capitol I took while wandering around the UT campus one evening.

This is not a very often seen view.  It was taken from behind which is usually thought of as the front.  But it does show what an incredibly perfect place this would have been to build a series of buildings that would be protected by the natural topography.  Imagine trying to scale the rock walls in ancient times where warfare was much simpler.  Seems almost impossible.  Now, at least in this image, the buildings on top, including the infamous Parthenon, are being reconstructed for all us tourists to gawk over and reminisce about.  Also, modern Athens now sprawls all around the massive ancient citadel.   I wonder if any of these buildings will be around thousands of years hence, if they’d even be worth reconstructing?

San Francisco.  In most cities, you have to know where to go.  In San Francisco, just start walking around and you’ll bump into just about everything you could imagine: bars, restaurants, music venues, views, sights, famous icons.  You get the picture.  Here, I’d just dropped my wife off at the airport and while wandering through the city to cross the golden gate I decided to hike up and through Bernal Heights Park that I hadn’t done before.  Glad I did.  What a great sight!

It’s spring and love is in the air.  Those interested in coupling come out of their winter hiding, lock eyes, and the pheromones take over.  I guess it doesn’t matter what specie you are, human with our own version of shell or reptile with theirs.

Weather is almost a factor in Bellingham.  If you’re a sun freak it’s probably not for you.  Clouds, whether or not it’s raining, are always in the equation.  I really didn’t like that part of growing up there.  I had a hunger for sun and the light.  Of course, now that I have lived other places and traveled quite a bit and even now live in sunny California, I appreciate the beauty of the place and its aggravating climate.  Now I enjoy rediscovering the beautiful spots of NW Washington.

It’s so much fun walking around unfamiliar neighborhoods, seeing what they have to offer.  I had walked around New Orleans all day.  Even at night I was sweating, profusely.  Though I had stopped at a few places to eat, drink and listen to great music, I was tired.  And I still had a ways to walk, then wait for the streetcar for the ride over to my hotel in the garden district.  Color and beautiful architecture was all around me.

I was tired.  I’d been wandering around downtown Phoenix for hours and ready to sit for a while.  I’d just reached the car when, of course, on the other side of the street I noticed this scene of palm trees set against the downtown architecture.  Well, one or two more photos won’t kill me.  Later in my travels I had many of my images stolen as my empty camera bag, except for memory chips, was stolen out of my car.  At least I enjoyed my time.
