Of course you know I love color.  The richer the better.  When I walked into the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas I felt like a kid in a candy store!  I mean glitz and glitter and glamour and color everywhere my eyes could roam.  I just stood close to the entry door, set my tripod and camera and tried to stay away from anyone official who might notice and tell me that no tripods are allowed.  (I did get that at the Venetian).  Well, no problem!  Vegas seems to have so much substance for a place known for being so shallow.  A cover up?  Or just someplace where the business makes so much money they can afford the enticements?  I don’t gamble, but I do love the enticements. wynn-entry-2-1

Across the street from the State Capitol building is the Denver City and County Building; the place where all the local government processes are conducted.  It’s a beautiful building in a great part of town.  I guess I just like big iconic architecture, wherever I find myself.  I can’t remember why the flags are half-mast.  I even looked up historical events of that month.  I guess there’s always some kind of tragedy or reason to fly at half-mast.  I wish we could just let them fly and realize we live in a volatile world.

It’s so amazing to be here in amongst the Joshua trees.  I fall into complete awe every time I’m there.  Of course, I’ve never been to the moon, but, I get a sense that this is how I’d feel if I ever did go.  It’s so quiet and unique.  As I did on this particular hike, being off the roads is especially inspiring; wandering in and around and through this incredible topography.

What?  Jellyfish?  Magical?  Remotely interesting?  Jellyfish are mundane, boring, weak.  To be a jellyfish means you’re a wimp with no backbone.  But, maybe, just maybe, I wouldn’t mind being associated with this incredible creature.  It seems to come with some depth and color and complexity; all wonderful traits.  It looks capable of intelligence.  I could sure use some of that.  Magic?  Maybe so.

I drove up to the end of the road and parked.  I was intending to make it up to the infamous Hollywood Sign, at least most of the way, but it was getting dark and I kept getting distracted by the incredible views of Los Angeles and all the different colors and angles with every step I took.  And then I saw it!  As it was making its way out of the frame, I saw it.  Clearly something alien, and just cruising right over the heart of one of the largest cities in the world!  Do you see it?  There, on the right side of the frame.  Do you believe it?

I love stormy skies when I travel.  They make for much more interesting photography.  Drama, texture, frame-filling.  When the clouds rolled in when visiting my sister in Palm Desert I politely excused myself and drove around town looking for good vantage points.  I followed my nose, aiming for some hills to get some kind of perspective of where I was.  These desert mountains make an incredible frame for this beautiful valley. coachella-valley-view-3-3

A few lifetimes ago, in my 20’s, I fished for salmon commercially.  We’d head out pre-dawn and motor for a few hours before arriving at the fishing grounds; or we’d head to a different locale if we weren’t catching enough in one spot.  The best part about motoring around was sleep.  Ahh…. to catch a few winks on deck was heavenly after getting up so early.  Here, I’m in total empathy with the deckhand of the Susie King Taylor as she waits for her first morning riders across the Savannah River.

When I fly into Seattle, I always head north up through the city on the way to my destination.  Sometimes I’m hurrying through and don’t bother to stop.  But, this time I had some time and sought out this particular angle into the heart of the city for some nighttime photo-taking fun.  I was a bit frustrated that it was cloudy with the ever present northwest mist-drizzle-rain getting me wet, keeping me cold and casting doubt as to whether it was even worth being there.  As I chose to make the effort, I persisted.  Even after a bit of complaining, I’m usually glad I make the effort.

It’s December.  Though not official yet, the winter months are here.  The sun is low in the horizon.  The light is soft.  Yes, it’s full speed ahead into the holiday season, but the natural world comes alive in the cold beauty of hibernation.
