When I go somewhere relatively new, at least for photographic purposes, I always spend time beforehand researching the web and looking at maps for places that might be interesting to see.  If it looks interesting enough to go and be there, then I’m sure there will be some interesting photographic images that show themselves; like a sculptor chipping away at the stone to reveal the figure inside.  That’s what happened here and how I even managed to wind up at the Biltmore in the first place.  It looked like an interesting place, at it was!

I love a good swamp.  And they’re hard to find here in California.  So, when in the south I tend to seek them out.  They’re kind of like redwood trees or the Pacific ocean here, or cactus in the desert.  Common and familiar if you live there, unique and inviting if you don’t.  So, when in New Orleans I spent a morning wandering around City Park, which, of course, is filled with many swampy bayou’s and trails to walk.  It’s a great place to soothe one’s soul in the  city.

I brought my tent and pad and sleeping bag figuring I’d be spending the night outside.  After all, that’s what I do up in the Sierras, the mountains.  The great outdoors.  Well, I was so full from the day of both driving and exploring that I chose the easy way of a cheap motel in Bridgeport.  Call me soft, but I’m sure glad I did, too.  When I got up and left before dawn the next morning it was Cold!  I mean it was 15 degrees cold!  Stopping to photograph the emerging light was difficult on my frozen little fingers.  But, continue on I did.  I drove the 10 miles up to Twin Lakes to see the sights of fall.  Wow!

Dramatic weather is my favorite subject to photograph.  Whether just part of the larger scene or as the featured subject all together, I love weather.  Sail boats with their sails down on calm seas?  Probably not much there.  But with stormy clouds and a bit of color, now there’s something.  This is on Bellingham Bay in NW Washington state.

After such an incredible time in the South African bush and rural areas, driving into Johannesburg was somehow incongruous; until we arrived at our lodging destination, the wonderful and beautiful “Room with a View”.  Filled with art and antiques with an enticing architectural design it was a haven of beauty and made the journey back into civilization doable.

Of all the times I’ve been up to the Sierra Nevada mountains, I’d never been there just to see the fall colors.  I guess it seemed too touristy without taking the time and energy to do some serious hiking.  Well, this time there was very little hiking and a lot of “leaf peeping” as I’ve heard it called.  Photography was the major interest and activity.  And all I can say is, Wow!  What an incredible place to go and be!  Vivid color with brilliant contrasting blue skies.  I was as giddy as a kid in an candy store.

Whether it’s the Canal St. line or the St. Charles Ave. line, the streetcars in New Orleans are awesome!  At least I found them that way.  In fact, I would head downtown on the St. Charles St. line just to ride on it; like a kid finishing his carnival ride, then getting right back in line to do it again.  And what was most alluring were the sounds; the churning of the gears, the rattling as it picked up speed and slowed down.  Rhythmical, almost familiar, and somehow comforting.  Hmmm… think I’ll get back in line.

When driving down the road, do you ever notice those signs that say “Historical marker ahead”?  I do.  I don’t always stop but sometimes I do.  If I’m feeling patient and not in a hurry to get somewhere I enjoy stopping and imagining the scene being as it once was.  That’s what happened here.  I was driving down the road, going somewhere, when I saw the sign for “Air Museum”.  I especially like to stop at these places when out shooting photos, so…. I stopped.  I wonder who flew it, if it was used in combat or just recognizance.  Ready for takeoff, captain!

Being able to stay right above the Pacific Ocean sure does wonders for capturing the constantly changing moods of the coastline.  It was winter, my favorite time for coastal photography, and we rented a perfect little secluded cabin, nestled directly above the ocean on its high-bank perch.  What a great place to watch the waves and weather roll in.
