At the western edge of Little Lakes valley the trail heads up quickly  to Morgan Pass.  It’s not very far and when I was ready to continue up for the long haul I realized I was already atop the pass.  Easy!  And what a difference heading down the other side.  It’s only half a mile down to Upper Morgan lake and the topography changed to an incredible moonscape of barren granite.  With the stormy cloud cover blending in with the same color scheme it seemed ominous.  I found a comfortable rock above the lake and just sat in the quiet, listening to the silence and watching the light change.  I love the high Sierra.

I’m still not sure what the main feature is in this image.  The partial image of the general Grant memorial?  It does take up half the image.  The Washington Monument?  No, too small.  The sunset?  The guys in the lower right watching the setting sun?  It is, I think, more of a left/right split image.  The horses galloping forth out of the statue into the present scene of setting sun happing now.  Whatever it is, it was a great place to be on that DC evening. grant-washington-memorial-sunset-1

Ah… to be in the Greek Isles.  Warm  breezes and romance.  At least that’s what I conjure up inside when Greece comes to mind.  White stucco buildings and strong Greek coffee, hiking along narrow roads, ferrying among remote islands, friendly people happy to see us.  I feel more romantic just thinking about and remembering.

I love the eastern Sierra!  Any of the access roads into the mountains from Highway 395 lead to breathtaking beauty and adventurous hiking.  We chose the Little Lakes Valley to hike in this time as we didn’t really have the time for a multiday backcountry trip.  So, we went knowing we’d have only 2 nights.  On this day we hiked maybe 12 miles through this gorgeous valley, spotted with numerous lakes and streams with 13,000 foot peaks framing the trail.  Tired feet are well worth the effort.

Fall is fast approaching which reminds me that the grape harvest is happening around here.  So I think of wine and then I remember the Frey house.  It’s part of a biodynamic winery up in Mendocino county somewhere in the middle of nowhere.  It’s family run and this house is part of what is possible to rent for your next big event.  It’s a fun place.  Drink up.

Hey!  I’m home!  After extensive days traveling, on the road, hiking, visiting and just plain being away from home, I’m back home; where the heart is home.  Back to work, gardening, photo processing, sorting, fall home projects, and on and on home.  I’m promising myself to post here more often now, whether anyone’s listening or not.  But, I’ll keep posting, regardless.  Hey, I’m home!

I like this photo.  And still it hardly does justice to the beauty that is constant and everywhere in this little slice of Kings Canyon National Park.  It took us the better part of 2 days to hike in to Rae Lakes; up and over Kearsarge pass and then Glen pass at just under 12,000 feet to get to this incredible valley of lakes and creeks at around 10,500 feet.  The smells, the stillness, the peace.  Awesome!

How do you capture an image without any tourists involved when in a touristy attraction?  That must be what a koan is; something to meditate on that doesn’t have an easy or obvious answer.  Or a question like “how many chucks does a woodchuck chuck”?  Have you ever seen a woodchuck?  Well, I saw no woodchucks, though there were plenty of tourists, here at the Kolner Dom, or Cologne Cathedral, in Cologne Germany.  What a place to explore!  A massive structure and amazing place to wander inside of.  How does one capture an image without the everpresent fellow tourist?  It takes a lot of patience and waiting and a bit of luck. cologne-cathedral-priests--1

Absolutely one of my favorite places to be is Joshua Tree National Park.  The landscape and quiet is incredible!  Certainly not as well know as Death Valley or Yosemite, but every bit as impressive to explore.

No, it’s not the 3:10 to Yuma, but it could be the 5:10 to Pasadena.  And what do people do these days while waiting?… check out whatever’s on their phone.  In fact, for the most part, it seems that no one waits at all, anymore.  A world with no down time.  Always gotta be updating or texting or tweeting or talking or anything to just keep pushing onward.  How much do you let yourself do nothing; just be wherever it is you are?  No phone, no talking, just taking it all in on this beautiful Earth; just waiting for the train.
