I suppose he could  be anywhere.  Late at night, one train passing while he waits for the one that will get him to wherever it is he’s going.  I often wonder; is he just getting off work and heading home?  Off to see his lover?  Been out on the town?  Another moment in time, probably not even marked by the subject himself who’s probably lost in thought, waiting yet again.  Where is he?  Do you know?

What a great place to walk!  In the hills above Tiburon, California in Marin county is a large open space with trails and 360 degree views that won’t quit.  Depending on where you walk, there’s a different vantage point; of the golden gate, San Francisco, the east bay.  It’s city planning at its best as it could easily be covered with large, estate homes.  But we need great places to walk or take photos!  Thank you Marin county.

I was driving west along I-10 last winter, heading back to the Coachella Valley from Phoenix.  It was actually raining out!  It was fresh and different.  Nothing like the desert can be with its heat and dry endless blue sky.  I pulled off to the side of the road just to enjoy the scene.  No hurry.  Don’t have to be somewhere.  There’s so much life and beauty around, even in the depths of winter gloom.

Yes, I was on the golf course, playing golf, when I took this shot.  But, for me the image is not so much about golf as it is the mountains, and the desert and the palm trees and the dappled sun light.  In other words, just being this kind of beautiful environment is the reference point.  The desert; a wonderful place to be in the winter.

Urban wandering and the architecture that makes every city unique has become one of my favorite pastimes.  I used to avoid the girth of the city for the fresh wide open spaces of the natural world, especially when it came to photography.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love and even prefer the mountains or ocean if given the choice, but I’ve discovered that hiking in an urban setting can reap its own rewards.  Instead of trees or rocks, there are buildings, unique in many ways.  Denver’s art museum takes unique to the more extreme edge.  It’s a fascinating study that proudly takes its place on the edge of downtown at civic center park.

It’s both a blessing and a curse that I live so close, in fact am virtually surrounded by large fields.  This time of year the pollens flow freely and I’ve developed, over the past few years, some allergic symptoms to all of the otherwise beauty and abundance of the flowering shrubs and grasses.  Never-the-less, I do take the time to appreciate what’s given in my surroundings and I’ll take the blessings of nature over my frustrations any day.  On this particular evening the bales were still there, cut, baled and ready to be taken in for storage.  The sun and clouds/coastal fog were doing a dance for a while when most of the clouds just vanished before the sun set.  The trailing color was stunning.

That’s what journeying down the Colorado River is; blending and morphing into everything that’s there.  There’s no distinction between the rock and canyon walls and river and sky and person immersed inside it all.  Human and nature blended as one.  That’s really what rafting into and through the Grand Canyon is all about; accepting the flow of the river and just being a part of it.

Are you one of those people who can take a word or phrase and immediately write a meaningful and personal poem about it?  I’m sure not.  I need to take it in for a bit, contemplate, let the feeling and thoughts come in and then take some interpretive time to form them into words in the right order so that they actually mean something.  Not the Poem Lady.  She sits in her chair at the Hollywood street fair/farmers market with her old-style portable typewriter.  She hears your content request and, seemingly instantaneously, the words enter somewhere, exiting through her deft finger tips and out onto a small sheet of paper.  You’ve given her the subject, she delivers your message for the day, you pay her what you will.  A circular symbiosis of the soul.

I was wandering around this day, as I’m known to do.  And Copenhagen is certainly an easy and beautiful place to wander about in.  Anyway, in my exploration I came across this old scene of who knows how long.  Every day at noon at Amalienborg Palace the changing of the guard takes place.  There’s something comforting about traditions like this.  Totally unnecessary today but comforting none-the-less.  Maybe it helps us feel just a tiny bit safer, too.

From Gas Works park in Seattle there’s a great view across Lake Union to the Seattle skyline.  But the park itself is really quite interesting.  Especially in the evening when the sun’s down.  It used to burn coal in days gone by and can be a bit ominous looking.  Perfect!
