Who doesn’t like a sunrise?  I think we all must.  I mean it’s life affirming; a new day showing itself; Earth waking up announcing itself, being itself while we humans get dressed, have coffee, get in cars, merge with other cars, go off to work somewhere.  And all the while, sunrise happens, rocks get wet, the ocean roars.

Cars rushing by.  Palm trees waving.  Casinos calling out, wanting you to come in off the street and make yourself comfortable.  Spend, I mean win, some quick cash.  In fact, you can leave behind of much as you want.  Why not all of it!  Well… no, I think not.  I have to admit, though, I love the ambiance, the diversity of people, the architectural maze to get lost in.  And all within walking distance.  Quite convenient is Las Vegas.

Freeways.  LA is full of them.  Freeways times ten with on-ramps and off-ramps both straight and circular.  Can’t go there without being involved with them somehow.  Both a bane and blessing.  There’s even a great song about LA freeways by Jerry Jeff Walker.  “If I can just get off of this LA freeway without getting killed or caught” says the chorus.  Well, I wasn’t killed.  My experience this time wasn’t so bad.  In fact I sought them out at night.  Incredible places of energy and motion, especially in relation to the architecture of downtown.  For my purposes, a blessing.

This icon, the Sphinx, is so huge, so ominous.  It just sits there, regally, gazing out over the desert; a sentry for the pyramids, on guard for invading marauders who would rather destroy what was sacred.  Or, at least, so I imagine.  Actually, it was quite incredible to be there from before sunrise, without hordes of tourists.  Just our little group of 25, alone amongst these seemingly alive “beings” on the Giza plateau.  Whether quietly singing or meditating or imagining, we were all in awe, blessed to be thrust into ancient times and tingling mystery.

Wherever I am I’m always drawn to water, if there’s any in the vicinity.  Why is that?  There are plenty of awesome places without water, but I always check out the waterways first.  Strolling along the Savannah River in the pre-sunrise light helped me attune to this beautiful city.

Who doesn’t enjoy watching kids play?  I sure do.  Especially when two or more are playing together.  Young kids know how to live; engaged, alert, present, enjoying the exuberance of life, with the key word being joy.  I learn a lot about life by watching kids play.  When my 5 year old granddaughter and I go to the park, she always makes a point of seeking out other kids and making friends and just running and playing together.  Instant recognition.  The joy of life.  This particular scene is in downtown Phoenix, Arizona at St. Mary’s Basilica.

I just happen to love roses.  A few years ago I got a bit crazy with them and planted over 50 around our property.  It’s only half an acre so they kind of take over this time of year.  I haven’t been pruning them too much either so they’re starting to get pretty large within their own range of growth.  It’s pretty amazing to be walking around the yard, not paying too much attention to them when, Wham!  This incredible and intense fragrance wafts up and around.  I just stop and relish in the moment.

The mouth of the Nooksack river and the Lummi Indians of NW Washington are pretty much tied at the hip.  Salmon run up the river on their way to spawn and the Lummi’s stretch their nets along the mouth, both for food and commerce.   Here, it’s a crisp, cold fall day as the fishermen work at untangling their net.  It’s beautiful in the north Puget Sound.  The native fishery is a big part of it.

It was an early Sunday morning and for some reason most people in the park seemed content to not be wandering about.  Maybe they were breaking down their camp or sipping morning coffee or just getting ready to head back to city life.  Whatever the case, it seemed as if all of Yosemite was mine and a few other photographer types enjoying the immense beauty of this spectacular valley.  This particular year the mountains were overflowing with snow-pack and the runoff into rivers and waterfalls was the highest in quite some time.  There are but few words to describe this place called Yosemite.  With the wildly flowing rivers and falls, awesome is one of them.

My granddaughter was just 2 days old and I was up early in the crisp morning air.  I meandered down to the south side of river to catch the morning light glow on the city.  Peaceful time of day and a satisfied, content feeling inside.  Welcome to the world, Madison of Austin.  I’ll see you later this month!
