Typical summer day in Seattle.  Stereotypically, at least.  Sunny the day before, sunny the day after.  But it was on this day I was wandering around downtown, taking in the sights and sounds of this beautiful place.  Perfectly cloudy NW Washington.  Although I grew up just 90 miles north of here, I had never been up the Columbia tower building.  The largest building in town has an observation deck, enclosed of course, and it costs a few dollars to get in, but it’s great for sweeping views of Seattle and the Puget Sound.

Being from the northern hemisphere, I don’t get to see the stars from the southern half of Earth very often.  So, as a lover of the night sky, regardless of location, I reveled in discovering some of the ones showing themselves in South Africa.  Taken from just outside one of the huts we were staying in at the white lion preserve in the Timbavati region of NE South Africa, the southern cross shows itself to the left of the tip of the hut.  The 2 bright stars just above the cross are Alpha & Beta Centauri, known as the pointers.

Every once in a while we get a tsunami warning here on the California coastline.  So far, it’s never amounted to anything even remotely serious, but it has made for some larger than normal surf conditions.  If I happen to hear about it, and if at all possible, I get in the car and drive the half hour out to the coast just to be there and watch.  Most of it’s high bank and I don’t at all feel in danger.  So, I go watch the spectacle.  This is taking place just north of the small town of Jenner at the mouth of the Russian River.  An awesome day for wave watching.

One evening, not long ago, I stepped out onto my back deck and looked up.  Wow.  An incredibly prominent ring around the moon was not only visible, but quite bright, as well.  So, duh, I set up camera and tripod to see what I could capture.  I love the night sky, especially in winter, and I don’t make nearly enough images of something I have only to look up to see.  Well, on this night, it was all here: moon with ring; the twins Castor and Pollux of Gemini inside the ring on the left; orion half in and half out, with its belt right on the ring in the lower right; and Jupiter just outside the ring, shining brightly in the upper right.  The blessings of a heavenly angel shining its cosmic energies down to Earth.

I just got back from Oregon.  Didn’t have the opportunity to make as many images as I usually do, but at other times I have.  The whole coast is an incredible place to explore.  Seems like every few miles is a state park.  Lots of little towns and beaches and rivers running to the sea and bridges and jetties and sand dunes and haystack rocks rising out of the Pacific Ocean.  The beauty is endless.  This particular beach is in the south between Coos Bay and Brookings.  A great place to stop and stroll; especially when the tide’s out, like this, and you can get out a ways and take in the sea breeze, ocean and sand.

There really isn’t anywhere you can go in Las Vegas that doesn’t present itself with some kind of interesting image.  Outside, inside, day, night.  Doesn’t matter.  Art, color, people, glitz, it’s all there.  Every building, every casino has something unique and different.  Heck, who has time for gaming when there’s so much to see?  Maybe you do.  I’ll save my money and watch the show.  Here, I was just wandering around the Bellagio, taking in the sights. bellagio-hallway-3-1

I awoke from from my camp site well before dawn, grabbed what I thought I need for an all day outing in the death valley desert, and headed up to the infamous Zabriskie point to check out the light on Manley Beacon.  Even before dawn there were many people there, most with tripod and camera, just waiting for first light.  I found an open spot and waited as well.

It’s winter.  I keep having to remind myself of that.  Winter is supposed to be of cold and snow and bundling up just to get somewhere.  But, not here where I live in California.  No snow.  Yes, it’s cold in the mornings, but that’s a relative term to what many experience as winter.  So, here’s winter in all its snowy glory.  On the western slopes above Lake Tahoe is the ski area of Squaw Valley.  The 1960 winter Olympics were held there.  Anyone remember?  We were up there a couple of years ago and took the lift up to the upper ski area.  What a gorgeous winter scene.  Deep, deep snow; skiers and snow boarders; the quiet of the mountains in their winter glory.  Not sure what this mountain is called.  Maybe you know?
