Copenhagen is clean and elegant and easy to get around in.  On this bright sunny morning I went wandering off by myself, taking in the ambiance and shooting photos.  I love wandering, going where my legs take me, the catching something out of the corner of my eye and following that.  Here, I spotted the King, Frederik VII, in front of the palace.  I wonder how easy it was to wander in his day.  There were no streets made for cars.  Was I standing where the horses used to graze?  Where he addressed his court?  Ah, the imaginings of another time.

This staircase is off limits.  That may be a clue to where this is.  Can you guess?  I’ll let you know where it is in another couple of posts.  Well, I’m sure  you’ve already figured that it must be some part of government.  Government is often off limits.  Don’t get too close or someone might just disapprove of what’s going on here.  Of course it could be a matter of national security.  That’s the ace that’s often played.  Anyway, I thought it was an exceptional staircase.  I could imagine stealthily climbing the stairs that leads to a small back chamber with a few shady looking people who are quite surprised to see me.  Hmmm…  I must have discovered something big.

Update:  Can’t guess?  It’s in the Supreme Court building in Washington DC.

Well, they kind of look like a cornfield.  Or a haystack.  Or just an oddly unique part of what is a unique place.  The devil’s cornfield.  Another reference to the devil or death.  Personally, I find it quite alive!  Rich in its uniqueness.  The quiet, resounding.  To open and get lost in the vastness where death turns once again to the beauty of life.

When I went to bed it was all overcast and I had my doubts about the weather for the sunrise the next morning.  But, I got up anyway and took a peak out the window.  Wow!  I could see stars and just a few clouds from my hotel room.  So, I hurried up and got dressed and started to drive out towards the coast, not really knowing the area.  On my map I spotted a small park so I wound my way around the town and found the park nestled along the Crooked River.  Perfect.  The clouds were toning the light down with the thunderheads dancing out of the horizon.  It was warm and humid.  Ah, the south.

In the spring of  ’08 we were outside walking around and enjoying the evening ambiance of Cologne, Germany.  Now the Cologne cathedral is almost always in sight of wherever you go there, but on this evening I noticed that if I found the right place I could position the moon directly between the 2 spires.   Luckily, there was a small grassy knoll with an unencumbered opening looking directly to the cathedral.  Now in those days I was not traveling with my tripod so I just set my camera down on the grass, found something to prop it up just a bit and fired away.

Last summer I was driving down 101 through the redwoods.  Sadly, it was all a foggy overcast.  Never-the-less I chose to take a side road up into the hills and check out the Lady Bird Johnson grove of trees.  I figured it would really be socked in, but when in Rome….  While driving, the road started heading up and up and when I actually got to the grove I was at the transition point of the fog and blue sky above.  Wow!  What luck.  What contrast; the sunbeams filtering down through the trees revealing the blue sky above.  Natures perfection.

I go up to my home town of Bellingham, WA. a couple of times a year.  One cool, cloudy fall day with nothing much happening I decided to take a drive down into the next county and found myself wandering the back roads.  I love taking the roads less traveled, biding my time, taking in a new and fresh view of familiar sites; passing rich farmland and dormant tulip fields until I came to the little town of La Conner.  It’s a quaint little town of artists and fishermen, built next to a small waterway near the mouth of the Skagit River.  The perfect place for a little lunch and a photo or two.

The Mandarin hotel in Vegas is another one of those artistic/visual feasts.  Wherever I wandered, and I did wander a bit, a photo was begging to happen.  In fact just being in Vegas with an intent of photography is like being inside a large piece of granite that’s just waiting for you to make the cuts that brings it to life.  Does that make sense?  Well, anyway, the Mandarin Oriental piece of granite was a nice place to wander around in and create photo sculpture.

I love photographing flowers.  I really like growing them myself.  I don’t grow water lilies, though, and I don’t stumble across them too often.  So, when I do I take full advantage.  These were growing in a place I would never have expected; the cool, wet pacific northwest at Rosario resort on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands.

You’ve got to admire a man like Scotty.  Why anyone would choose to build a home in the middle of nowhere, where it’s hot and the sun blazes and it’s dry and did I mention hot, is beyond me.  It’s an interesting place given the locale and the grandeur of the place.  As they say, a mans home is his castle.  And in this case, it really is.  His grave marker from his death in 1954 still stands prominently on the hill overlooking his dry desert terrain.
